One of the most underrated and underappreciated Yankees from the 2012 season was Jayson Nix. With injuries to Alex Rodriguez and the incomparable Eduardo Nunez waiting in the wings, Nix provided a solid replacement at third and in relief of Derek Jeter. In his first go-around in the big-leagues, Nix was a genuinely great surprise. With solid defense and a couple of big hits, Nix proved to be a valuable piece of the puzzle. (more…)

A few players that could impress the Yankees in September

With September being two weeks away, the rosters for every team expand from 25 players to 40. With those extra 15 players, there may be a few that could make a case to be on the team next year instead of being in the minors. The New York Yankees have a few interesting players, especially in areas where they are hurting. The starting pitching outside of Hiroki Kuroda has been extremely sluggish, the bullpen could always use some padding and offensively, some of these guys who are playing now may not be there next year. A few players the Yankees may want to keep an eye on are Adam Warren, Brandon Laird, Justin Thomas, and David Adams as they are all on the 40-man roster. (more…)

Swisher leads homer-happy Yankees to 6-4 win over Red Sox

The New York Yankees are on a roll and it’s their pitching doing most of the leg work. Freddy Garcia continues to be reliable, if not better, than some of his younger cohorts. He tossed 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball, both runs off Josh Hamilton homers, as the Yankees have won the seven of their last eight games. (more…)

Blue Jays bury Hughes; Yankees unable to dig all the way out in 10-7 loss

The New York Yankees saw their four-game win streak snapped yesterday afternoon as Phil Hughes suffered through his second poor start in a row. The Toronto Blue Jays ripped Hughes to the tune of seven runs in four innings dropping his record to 11-10 and raising his ERA to 4.44. The Yankees mounted a spirited comeback but it fell short in the 10-7 loss. (more…)

The injuries, the inability to hit with runners in scoring position, inconsistency in each facet of the game and perceived managerial lapses have all been a part of the 2012 New York Yankees season. You know what? After 110 games, the Bronx Bombers are in first place by five games in the loss column (yes John Sterling in this instance you are right; forget the half game, the loss column is where the records matter). Yet, most of the chatter from some “fans” blasts the Yankees. I say this is a team that should be embraced. (more…)

The Yankees and the month of August

So clearly, it’s been noted that the New York Yankees have had somewhat of an unusual trend of losing games lately. Since the All-Star break, the Yankees have gone 11-11 and their streak of dominance in the MLB has been currently won over by the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds who now both hold better records than the Bombers. Even the Baltimore Orioles who sit 5.5 games out of first in the AL East are going nowhere but up, especially with the Tampa Bay Rays on their tail. Out of those 11 wins, six of them came from the softer teams in the AL such as the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. When the Yankees have faced contending teams as of late, such as the Oakland A’s, the Yanks seem to falter a bit. Currently, they’re locked in a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers, a team that loves to remind us who won in the ALDS last year. After this, the Yankees face quite a few tough teams such as the Texas Rangers for four games, the surging Boston Red Sox, the hard-nosed Chicago White Sox along with playing the Blue Jays six times in the remainder of the month. The Yankees have no reason to really be concerned, but if they continue to play the way they have, then the concern may be legitimate. (more…)
