The Struggles of Ivan Nova

We are just over a week into a brand new baseball season, but for some players, the demons of 2012 haven’t gone away just yet. Admittedly, it has been a very small sample size that Ivan Nova has played in during the 2013 season, but the issues from 2012 are beginning to creep into his game again. With a depleted lineup and a deceptively weak middle of the bullpen, it has been no secret that the starting pitching will need to be on-point in order for the Yankees to tread water the next few weeks. However, it appears that maybe Ivan Nova didn’t get the memo.

Should the Yankees consider trading Ivan Nova?

As of a couple weeks ago, the New York Yankees hadn’t ruled out the possibility of putting starting pitcher Ivan Nova on the trading block. Something tells me that this possibility hasn’t gone away and with good reason. Sure we can all look at Nova’s struggles in 2012, and the fact that he’ll be 26 heading into the 2013 season, but there are other teams desperate for pitching. There are also other teams that may overlook Nova’s struggles and see potential in him. Whatever it may be, the Yankees have room to make him a bargaining chip in order to bring in some talent that may help the team sooner than later. (more…)

Two words come to mind when trying to describe Ivan Nova’s 2012 season: “frustrating” and “yikes.” The two terms are not mutually exclusive, as Nova failed to replicate the success he enjoyed in 2011. Much of that success and Nova’s ability to “just win,” belied many deep issues, and those emerged with a vengeance in 2012, ultimately costing him his spot in the rotation and postseason roster. Nova Stunning in Return; Yankees Keep Pace in AL East Race

If you could sum up the Yankees 2012 season so far, it would be inconsistent. No one has personified that more than Ivan Nova this year. However, Nova was sparkling in his return from the DL in an important game against the Tampa Bay Rays. He gave up only two runs while striking out eight and walking off to a standing ovation in the sixth inning in a 5-3 win this afternoon. (more…)

According to Wikipedia (this is a fantastic way to begin any piece of writing, by the way), the collapse of a star can cause “a violent expulsion of the star resulting in a supernova, or the release of gravitational potential energy may be insufficient and the star may collapse into a black hole.” Unfortunately for the New York Yankees, Ivan Nova has been more of a black hole than a supernova this year. He had star potential, but the potential was insufficient to make Nova into a superNova, and as a result, his season collapsed into what some may call a black hole of no return (you like that? Are the Yankees better off without Ivan Nova in September?

This season has shown us that Ivan Nova is still an immature pitcher. Now, before I get jumped by saying that, let me clarify. Nova is not a bad pitcher, but he’s not a mature pitcher either. He hasn’t developed yet into what the New York Yankees had been hoping for and his bloated ERA this season has not helped his case. In 2011 we got used to Nova going out and giving us a quality start. In 2012 he’s looked more like 2010′s version that just seems lost on the mound. While he didn’t start too many games in 2010, his experience from last year should have stuck with him into this year. Nova has not done well this season and heading into September, maybe it’s better that he landed on the disabled list for the Yankees because with the division lead slipping, the Bombers need quality. New York Yankees starter Ivan Nova has lost it. More than it, really. He lost the game, lost his edge, lost his ability to hold a lead and is more or less lost. Nova allowed a grand slam to Kevin Youkilis as part of a sixth-inning six-run performance as the Yankees fell to the Chicago White Sox 7-3. (more…)
