Joe Girardi’s decision to leave Vernon Wells out of the starting lineup in the New York Yankees’ 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Monday left many fans dumfounded. In his last 10 games, Wells is batting .313 with three home runs and eight runs batted in. That is nearly a run per- game of production sitting on the pine. (more…)

Going into 2013, we all knew about the Yankees “austerity” plan; get below $189 million for 2014. So in free agency, they re-signed their own guys, like Hiroki Kuroda and added guys like Travis Hafner to one year deals. The only guy who got more than one year was Ichiro Suzuki. He got a two year deal with the thinking that he’d be the right fielder for the next two years. Now the question is, should he even be starting right now? (more…)

Ichiro Suzuki used to be good with the Seattle Mariners. Then he was not good with the Seattle Mariners. Then he was good with the New York Yankees. On the one hand, Ichiro is 39 years old and showed major signs of decline early last year. On the other hand, the short porch in right clearly helped Ichiro produce, and his performance as a Yankee was very encouraging. (more…)

Slow news day in Yankee Land (which is good or bad these days depending on who you ask), but one tidbit from the Associated Press shows that Ichiro Suzuki is excited about his first full year with the club. The 39-year-old outfielder inked a two-year, $13 million contract earlier this offseason as the Yankees wait to reap the benefits that will come from his quest for 3,000 hits. He came over in a trade from the Seattle Mariners last July and played very well as the Yankees took first place the division and earned the #1 seed in the AL playoffs. (more…)

Why the Ichiro deal is good for the Yankees

Maybe it’s just me, but I never knew why people were opposed to the New York Yankees re-signing Ichiro Suzuki for two years. Surely it isn’t because of the “decreasing” value he’ll bring in 2013 and 2014 that seems to be the general opinion, right? Okay, so maybe Suzuki won’t get 200 or more hits, but come on, what he offers goes way beyond that. He’s one of, if not the best pure contact hitter in the game since 2001 and he’s a perfect fit with the Yankees who forgot how to simply hit the ball. Not to mention, Suzuki is still a solid fielder and now has found a permanent job in right field. What’s not to like about this deal? (more…)

Yankees finalizing deal with Ichiro Suzuki for two-years, $13 million

After a few days of fine tuning, the New York Yankees have come to an agreement with Ichiro Suzuki on a two-year deal worth $13 million according to a tweet from CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman. There has not been a confirmation at this point, but there the numbers change, we’ll update you. With the signing, the Yankees have finally pieced together a full lineup with the only question mark being, who will be behind the plate. Suzuki was offered two-years, $14 million from the Philadelphia Phillies and two-years, $15 million from another team believed to be the San Francisco Giants. Suzuki said all along that he preferred to come back to New York and showed it by taking a lower offer. (more…)
