The New York Yankees finished off the first-half of the season last night with a 7-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees moved to 52-33 on the season, their highest mark over .500. Robinson Cano won the home run derby tonight, becoming the first Yankee since the Great Giambino in 2002 to win. Not only did he win, but he beat Red Sock Adrian Gonzalez in the finals. I guess there are some things $154 million can’t buy…

Robbie smacked a final-round record 12 homers (besting A-Gone by one) for a total of 32 long balls in his first derby. Cano had his old man, Jose, pitch to him and didn’t disappoint; his longest dinger went 472 feet in a classic slugfest.

Robinson Cano will not be taking part in the Home Run Derby on Monday due to a lingering back issue. Mark Feinsand’s sources have said the injury has bothered the lazy second baseman for the past few days but has not kept him out of the lineup.

It’s interesting because the announcement comes just one day after hitting coach Kevin Long referred to the derby as an “exhausting process.” Long went on to say, “It takes a lot out of you. It’s taxing. You see guys come back after the home run contest and it affects their swing.”

Hmmmmm. What’s really puzzling is if he really is suffering a back injury why hasn’t he been held out of the lineup? Or, more importantly, why is he still playing in the All-Star game?

I hope this is just an excuse to keep from messing up Cano’s swing because, as we’ve seen with Aceves, a back injury can be quite debilitating. The last thing the Yanks need is another injury.
