Should the Yankees be concerned about the Rays?

The trend lately is that the Tampa Bay Rays (63-52) have always found their way into the playoffs or have been at least threatening to get in. Will the same be true for this season? The New York Yankees (68-47) had a comfortable lead over the Rays and Baltimore Orioles, but now that lead has slipped by a few games. The Rays are currently on a seven-game winning streak and they certainly seem to be making the most of it with the Yankees’ inconsistent play since mid-July. The Rays are a team that primarily focuses on their pitching and with David Price (15-4, 2.50 ERA) leading the way, it may be a rough road ahead for the Yankees who play the Rays six more times before the regular season ends. This week was special for the New York Yankees in a lot of ways. We had HOPE Week and it culminated with the always entertaining Old-Timer’s Day at the Stadium. Even though it seemed like New York blew an opportunity to win in the first game of their series against the Chicago White Sox, they were still able to salvage a split of the series thanks to timely home runs from Robinson Cano and great pitching from Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes. The New York Yankees went on the road for a grueling nine game trip to the West Coast and Detroit. They were able to pass the test with consistent quality starts from their starting pitching and the big bats coming through.The telling game of the road trip occurred last Sunday. After a tough loss against the Tigers on Saturday, Derek Jeter homered on the first pitch against reigning AL MVP Justin Verlander and Phil Hughes threw a complete game. Now, they face a six game homestand against some tough starting pitching from both the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Mets.

The Futility List: Bottom To Top – Ranking Week 1

The Futility List is all about that… futility. Sure, many another website will give you a nice and clean MLB team power rankings, listing the league from top to bottom, but I say those teams at the end need love too. So, we’ll start our list at the bottom! It’s not all about the breast… err, best team, you know!

Let’s put the face down and the bottoms up… wait, I’m mixing metaphors again… and let’s get to the first edition of THE FUTILITY LIST!

1. Washington Nationals (0-6)- If baseball were a bar, the Nats would be the guy in the corner with a drink in hand, standing alone, and sweating. Profusely.

2. New York Yankees (3-3) – Going .500 combined against the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals, two teams not expected to do much this season except watch the “real” franchises above them, is not a good way to get out of the gate. So with the expectation factor in mind, this ranking is about as right as two ugly lesbians being a couple.
