Embrace these Yankees for showing fight amid rough patch

The injuries, the inability to hit with runners in scoring position, inconsistency in each facet of the game and perceived managerial lapses have all been a part of the 2012 New York Yankees season. You know what? After 110 games, the Bronx Bombers are in first place by five games in the loss column (yes John Sterling in this instance you are right; forget the half game, the loss column is where the records matter). Yet, most of the chatter from some “fans” blasts the Yankees. I say this is a team that should be embraced. (more…)

Does Ichiro Really Help the Yankees?

I recently got into a discussion (more like an argument) with somebody over the Ichiro Suzuki trade. This person claimed the 11-year veteran didn’t improve the current New York Yankees roster. I was flabbergasted, outraged, and felt that this particular person had no idea what they were talking about. Specifically, he claimed that Dewayne Wise was every bit as good as Ichiro this season and shouldn’t have seen his playing time and roster spot disappear. Furthermore, he added Ichiro is only good by name, not by the numbers. So, I’m going to put their stats side-by-side and let you decide who you’d rather have. The only caveat is I’m not going to tell you which player is who.

Yankees acquire Ichiro from Mariners hours prior to first pitch; will be in Yanks’ road grays tonight

The New York Yankees have traded D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar to the Seattle Mariners for Ichiro Suzuki and cash first reported by Jack Curry of the YES Network via Twitter. Ichiro will be in tonight’s lineup for the Yankees, but the position in the lineup has yet to be determined by manager Joe Girardi. (more…)

Yankees’ bench allowing luxuries to Cashman, Girardi and starting squad

When the New York Yankees take the field on a given day, they send out a starting squad with a mix of older veterans, seasoned players and “peak” performers. The youngest players on the field on a regular basis are Russell Martin and Robinson Cano, both 29-years-old with Martin being four months Cano’s minor. Of course, the Yankees’ brass knew this going into the season, so their desire when building the bench was to have players who could not only fill in on occasion, but could handle lengthier periods of time on the field if required. The Yankees hoped that if there was a need to play a reserve on a more regular basis, they would not hinder the team’s overall performance. This Yankees’ bench has done that and more in 2012. Yankees finish off Blue Jays behind Kuroda’s gem

One thing teams do not want on getaway day is a long drawn out game. The New York Yankees had Mother Nature and their own offense working against that desire yesterday. Fortunately, Yankees starter Hiroki Kuroda offset rain delays and the offensive rallies with quick and efficient work when he was on the mound. In the end mother nature helped out by being too strong and the Yankees swept the Toronto Blue Jays by winning the series finale 6-0 in seven innings. (more…)

Yankees should stand pat in the outfield even if Gardner is done for season

Upon word yesterday that Brett Gardner suffered another setback, his third such instance since he was shelved on April 17 with a right elbow strain, the rumor mill became awash with potential options the New York Yankees should explore to fill Gardner’s shoes if it was determined he would miss the rest of the season. What should the Yankees do? Explore the market to replace Gardner or stand pat with the current crew in left field? My feeling is they should resist any urge to make a deal and here is why. (more…)

Slammin’: Ibanez’s bases clearing homer lifts Yankees over Blue Jays

The New York Yankees are linked to players each year around the trade deadline and yesterday talk of going after an outfielder began to peak when it was announced Brett Gardner had his third setback with his injured elbow. General manager Brian Cashman has been preaching that moves won’t be made for moves sake and that he is comfortable with the roster as currently constituted. Raul Ibanez may have further cemented that stance with a tie-breaking grand slam in last night’s 6-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. (more…)
