Sometimes, you just need your ace to pitch like an ace. A lot of aces didn’t around baseball today, but one who did was CC Sabathia. The Yankees starting pitching had the problem all week. The only time they got a win was when Andy Pettitte pitched so well on Thursday night. Well, Sabathia pitched seven shutout innings, and Jayson Nix led the offense with three hits, as the Yankees salvaged a game in Motown, beating the Tigers 7-0. (more…)

For all the talk about the New York Yankees depleted lineup, the pitching, or lack thereof, has been the story for the first four games of the season. You can’t win when you give up 23 runs in your three losses. The team ERA is 6.43. It was the same story today as the Yankees lost in the Tigers’ home opener 8-3. (more…)

Yanks Go Yard Series Preview Show: Yankees at Tigers (4/5-4/7)

The 2013 season is underway and the start for the New York Yankees has not been as pleasant as everyone expected. Even though the Bombers salvaged the series Thursday thanks to a vintage start from Andy Pettitte, The Bronx Bombers’ bats have not been explosive. Plus, the starting pitching took a minor scare with the injury to Hiroki Kuroda‘s bruised right finger during the 2nd inning of Wednesday night’s game. The Yankee news gets better each day off-the-field with Robinson Cano‘s new agency and the likely return of Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira on May 1st. However, fans hope the on-field product begins to take better shape. The Yankees will hit the road for their next seven games, beginning with the reigning American League Champion Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers have become the consensus pick by experts to win their second straight American League pennant this year. They brought back the same team as last year with two additions to their lineup. They signed former Angels’ outfielder Torii Hunter to protect reigning triple crown winner Miguel Cabrera and first baseman Prince Fielder. Also, they get back Victor Martinez, who missed all of last year with an ACL injury.

With a rotation led by Justin Verlander (pitches Sunday), this team will be a tough one to overthrow in the AL Central. I am sure Yankees’ fans will see a lot of flashbacks this weekend to the 2011 ALDS and the 2012 ALCS when the Tigers ended the Yankees’ seasons both years.

For this episode of the Yanks Go Yard show (recorded live Wednesday), I spoke with Matt Snyder from MotorCityBengals.com to talk about Detroit’s expectations for 2013 as well as some of the issues the team have. Mainly, we discussed Detroit’s closer-by-committee status now that Jose Valverde is back with the team on a minor league deal. Plus, which team poses the biggest threat to the Tigers winning the AL Central for the 3rd straight year?

Also, I discuss Kuroda’s injury, Robinson Cano‘s new agent, and much more. In turn, I returned the favor to Motor City Bengals by recording a spot on their podcast, which you can find on their website.

Recently, a friend of mine who’s a Detroit Tigers fan (first mistake there) rants and raves about how getting rid of Curtis Granderson has been one of the best things to happen to the team in quite a while. I guess not winning a championship since 1984 will set the bar pretty low, but it definitely got me thinking about former New York Yankees farmhand, Austin Jackson. (more…)

Yankees swing big sticks, hold off Tigers 12-8

Yankees’ rally falls short in ninth as slide continues

Since the All-Star break the Yankees have been unable to put together a streak to remind everyone how good of a team they really are. Last night, in a 6-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers they at least showed some heart scoring two runs of Tigers closer Jose Valverde while getting the lead-run in scoring position. (more…)

The Yankees and the month of August

So clearly, it’s been noted that the New York Yankees have had somewhat of an unusual trend of losing games lately. Since the All-Star break, the Yankees have gone 11-11 and their streak of dominance in the MLB has been currently won over by the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds who now both hold better records than the Bombers. Even the Baltimore Orioles who sit 5.5 games out of first in the AL East are going nowhere but up, especially with the Tampa Bay Rays on their tail. Out of those 11 wins, six of them came from the softer teams in the AL such as the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. When the Yankees have faced contending teams as of late, such as the Oakland A’s, the Yanks seem to falter a bit. Currently, they’re locked in a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers, a team that loves to remind us who won in the ALDS last year. After this, the Yankees face quite a few tough teams such as the Texas Rangers for four games, the surging Boston Red Sox, the hard-nosed Chicago White Sox along with playing the Blue Jays six times in the remainder of the month. The Yankees have no reason to really be concerned, but if they continue to play the way they have, then the concern may be legitimate. (more…)

Nova can’t hang with Verlander; Tigers beat Yankees 7-2

The New York Yankees knew going in that scoring runs off Justin Verlander was going to be tough. They were going to need a strong effort from Ivan Nova in order to stick with the Tigers’ ace. Unfortunately for the Yankees, Nova could only hold on through the fourth inning. (more…)
