On the heels of the events of the last week or so I thought I’d take a look at how the Yankees and double standards have come into play in MLB.

The first thing that caught my attention was Rafael Soriano and Untuckgate. I couldn’t fathom how a guy who untucked his jersey after he recorded a save garnered so much attention from the media. Who cares if he does that? MSM does, I soon realized. He was vilified by baseball purists as a player who broke the sacred “unwritten rules” by showing up an opponent. OK, whatever. Manager Joe Girardi said he had his closer’s back and that it didn’t bother him, which seemed to quash the controversy. (more…)

When I first saw the article that said free agent David Ortiz would have to “think about” playing for the Yankees my reaction was akin to this.

There’s no way I would want that guy on my favorite team, especially with all the memories I have of him killing said team. As a Yankee fan would you want to root for public enemy number one?

Then I got to thinking: what better way to rub it in Red Sox Nation’s face than to “steal” the guy who was the face of their franchise for so many years. When the Yanks head up to Boston next season, wouldn’t it be great to see Big Papi in a grey uniform with ‘New York’ written across the chest? One of the key cogs in The Thing That Shall Not Be Spoken Of would now be playing for the enemy.

I could get used to that, and my reasons are three fold:

The Futility List is all about that… futility. Sure, many another website will give you a nice and clean MLB team power rankings, listing the league from top to bottom, but I say those teams at the end need love too. So, we’ll start our list at the bottom! It’s not all about the breast… err, best team, you know!

Let’s put the face down and the bottoms up… wait, I’m mixing metaphors again… and let’s get to the first edition of THE FUTILITY LIST!

1. Washington Nationals (0-6)- If baseball were a bar, the Nats would be the guy in the corner with a drink in hand, standing alone, and sweating. Profusely.

2. New York Yankees (3-3) – Going .500 combined against the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals, two teams not expected to do much this season except watch the “real” franchises above them, is not a good way to get out of the gate. So with the expectation factor in mind, this ranking is about as right as two ugly lesbians being a couple.
