From Luis Tiant to Dennis Eckersley and Jim Rice to Bill Buckner. All the great Red Sox players of the past were at Fenway Park Friday afternoon to celebrate the fabulous field’s 100th Anniversary.

The problem for Boston was Eric Chavez was also there, along with Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher and Russell Martin. The four Yankees went yard for solo home runs, with Chavez accomplishing the feat twice, as New York ruined the Beantown bash with a solid 6-2 win.

Eric Chavez-wiki

Swish, Chavy and A-Rod hit their homers in the first five innings, as the Yanks built a 5-1 lead. Only David Ortiz, with a solo shot and Mike Aviles, with an RBI double, did any damage to New York stopper Ivan Nova, who chalked up his 15th straight regular season decision and improved to 3-0 on the season. Nova, who just goes about his business, was superb in allowing seven hits and just two runs over six frames.
Four Yanks (8-6) relievers shut down the Red Sox from there, with Mariano Rivera recording a pair of strikeouts in a perfect ninth. For Boston, which fell to a dreadful 4-9, the only celebrating was done prior to the game. That three Red Sox relievers held the Yanks scoreless in the final three innings seemed of little consequence. Clay Buchholz‘ awful start, nine hits and all six runs allowed in falling to 1-1, was enough to ruin the faithful’s fun at Fenway.
