Cause for Concern?: CC Sabathia and the Missing Velocity

Happy baseball season Yankees fans. All things considered, the Yankees did pretty well in their first game of the 2013 season, even if i was a loss. However, one thing to keep an eye on in the coming weeks: CC Sabathia and his velocity. While the Big Guy did pretty well in his first turn of the new season, one glaring inconsistency was his lowered velocity. And for an already depleted Yankees roster that will rely heavily on consistent pitching, and coming off minor elbow surgery, the continued strong play of CC Sabathia will be pivotal.

Should Hiroki Kuroda be the number one starter in the Yankees’ 2013 rotation?

In the long-term no, but in the short-term, why not?

Hiroki Kuroda did in 2012 what not a lot of people expected of him. Coming from the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kuroda had been an NL pitcher for his professional MLB tenure and to be thrown into the division that is the AL East is not something one can easily tackle. Kuroda did though. Aside from the injured Andy Pettitte, Kuroda was easily the most consistent pitcher in the New York Yankees rotation this past season and who’s to say he won’t be again in 2013? I like it when you call me big poppa! Here is a little mood music for this class session. CC Sabathia pitched pretty well coming off his contract extension. The 32-year-old Sabathia signed an extension with the Yankees last offseason worth $122 million over five years. Sabathia faced two DL stints this season due to a groin strain and stiffness in his throwing elbow which forced him to miss a few weeks of the season. Although he had injury troubles, Sabathia still managed to have a successful year for the Yankees. The Yankees’ ace was still their best pitcher even if Hiroki Kuroda had the year of his career. That just goes to show how good Sabathia truly is. (more…)

Yankees News: CC Sabathia under the knife and Mariano Rivera uncertain

Two of the marquee names in the New York Yankees pitching arsenal took very different steps toward getting ready for the 2013 season. CC Sabathia went in for a MRI after the season concluded and resulted in an appointment with Dr. James Andrews for arthroscopic surgery on his pitching elbow to remove a bone spur. Mariano Rivera spoke with Brian Cashman and instead of opening up contract negotiations was told he is now uncertain of his return. (more…)

CC Sabathia’s Playoff Record and True Ace Status

Much hoopla was made over the legitimacy of CC Sabathia‘s role as an ace for the New York Yankees. Many believe he’s not a true ace, but merely a good pitcher packaged as #1 starter in a rotation. It’s not a fair assessment to Sabathia who pitched very well in the Bronx as well as out in Cleveland, where he started his career. After last night’s beautiful performance against the Baltimore Orioles in Game 1 of ALDS, which the Yankees took 7-2, the hefty lefty was masterful and deserves all the praise as an ace. (more…)

Yankees win sixth straight behind Sabathia’s masterful outing and Martin’s walk-off HR

The New York Yankees took a page out the Baltimore Orioles magical season, when Russell Martin launched a ball into the left field seats for his second walk-off home run of the season. Not to be outdone, CC Sabathia looked like the ace the team has sorely missed over the past month, with a scoreless eight-inning, 11-strikeout performance. Unfortunate for him though, he took a no-decision as the bats couldn’t get going and the Rafael Soriano blew the slim 1-0 lead in the ninth inning. (more…)
