On Thursday, July 19th, the New York Yankees began a series against the Athletics at Oakland. They lost that game, got swept in the series, and from that day until August 7th, won only 6 out of 18 games. Of course, because they are the Yankees, many fans panicked. They criticized the Yankees for performing badly in the clutch and blowing leads and Brian Cashman for failing to make bigger moves at the trade deadline. No Desperation Here

Speaking to reporters at the Hark Rock Cafe in Manhattan, Brian Cashman gave some insight into the team’s off-season plans.

We’re a very aggressive organization and I think that has led us to a lot of the major talent that we’ve brought in here. But we’re not going to be desperate [this winter]. I think we’re going to be very conservative. If we don’t think a deal looks right or feels right or smells right, we’ll pass.

Or did he?

He already announced that the team will focus on “pitching, pitching and pitching” this winter, so this is clearly just a tactic to help the Yanks’ leverage. What is he supposed to say? “We’re going to jump on the first free agent pitcher we find and throw barrels of money at him?” That wouldn’t be a very smart move.

Later during the interview Cashman continued to play his hand smoothly. Asked which FA starters the Yankees are interested in he said:

Cashman Deal Done

In news that should surprise nobody, Brian Cashman, who was involved in a car accident yesterday, has a new deal with the Yanks. Presumably it’s another three-year pact, but the team is waiting for the World Series to end to make an announcement…unlike some people.

We’ll have details as soon as they’re released.

Brian Cashman was apparently in a car accident last night in Norwalk, Connecticut. The good news is that it was a very minor accident and nobody was hurt.

Yes, it’s that time of year when stories like this are news.

Cashman was driving east on Connecticut Avenue and rear-ended some lady in front of a Home Depot. According to the police report, he was following the broad too closely when traffic stopped. The collision caused “very minor damage” to her 2008 Honda and his 2010 Jeep.

The Yankees GM (for at least another three days, hopefully much longer) was issued an infraction — which carries a $132 fine — for following too close. If I were this lady I would start walking with a limp and get a neck brace as soon as possible; this could be her big pay day. Just kidding — kinda.
