MLB Trade Deadline: Did the Yankees measure up with the rest of the AL East?

On Tuesday at 4:00 pm, the New York Yankees made a minor yet important trade getting Casey McGehee from the Pittsburgh Pirates for soon to be DFA’d reliever Chad Qualls. It was the second deal completed by the Yankees in advance of the non-waiver deadline. The first, which you can see analysis of here, was getting Ichiro Suzuki and cash from the Seattle Mariners for two minor league pitchers, D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. The Yankees through Brian Cashman stated time and again that they would not make any major moves because of the cost factor and because they felt that they were in a good position with the roster, not to mention they expected to have Joba Chamberlain back soon (he of course has since returned) and Alex Rodriguez and Andy Pettitte back in September. While the New York Yankees are coming off a tough series in Tampa Bay, they were able to avoid a sweep with a huge comeback win Wednesday. Once the Bombers got Rays’ ace David Price out of the game, the heart of the order (Robinson Cano) was able to get the clutch hit to send New York to Boston with some confidence. Starting tonight, the Yankees will play the Red Sox sixteen times over the next 81 games, but this edition of the rivalry comes with a unique twist of a player switching sides.

Crawford’s clause

I have never seen anything like this before, but the Red Sox apparently put a clause in Carl Crawford’s seven-year, $142 million contract that says, if traded, the team acquiring him can’t turn around and deal him to the Yanks.

Wow. Paranoid much?

I didn’t know that was legal. And how would they even enforce that? Could they have put a clause in there that said he couldn’t be dealt to any AL East team?

It seems like a bush league move by the Red Sox, but, then again, what can you expect from that pack of losers?

Pedro Feliciano a GREAT move by Yanks

Dwight Gooden… David Cone… what do these two have in common, besides the inability to control some of their basest urges? Both had great careers with the Mets, but went on to have the one shining moment of those careers in the Bronx. Coney’s perfecto and Doc’s no-no were both perfect cappers to great careers.

Well, add another very good Mets pitcher to the Yankees roster as Pedro Feliciano confirmed to ESPN that he’s indeed signing with the Yanks by saying “I think it was a good thing to stay in New York. I mean, that’s the best city in the States.” This is an EXCELLENT move for the Yankees in an off-season during which the best news for a Yankee happened when Nick Swisher tied the knot with actress/fiancee Joanna Garcia.

OK, well maybe Swish’s wasn’t the best news, but are you really gonna argue when it let me post a picture of Garcia?

Yanks made offer to Cliff Lee + awesome Cashman quote

The Yankees apparently made an offer to Cliff Lee today. It was in the ballpark of $140 million for six years, which is friggin’ nuts. They need another starter, but that is just overkill. When does enough become enough? Lee’s agent, Darek Braunecker, left the winter meetings on Wednesday with “all the information he needs.”

Speaking of starters, Pettitte spoke with Cashman today and is still undecided about pitching in 2011.

Cashman also met with Carl Crawford on Tuesday night, which is also friggin’ nuts. I don’t want them to get CC, I think the Yanks’ outfield is just fine the way it is. I might get my wish because the Halos are the front runners to sign him. That’s coming from ESPN, so take it for what it’s worth.

All this reporting is making me sick. Please someone make a deal so we don’t have to hear about it every time Cliff Lee wipes his ass.

Finally, the money quote from Cashman:

I know my title is general manager, but I consider myself the director of spending for the New York Yankees.

Mo to sign two-year deal + other news

The greatest closer of all time is set to return to the Yanks for two more years at a total of $30 million. I’ve never said this before and I’ll probably never say it again, but I’m glad the Yankees signed this 41-year-old player for two years.

What’s interesting is that Mo received a three-year deal worth more money from another team — Jon Heyman says it was the Red Cox — but Mo wanted to remain with the Yanks.

Buster Olney says that the Yanks are “very much” in discussions in a deal for Carl Crawford. However, he says that a deal for Cliff Lee could hinder their ability to sign Crawford.

For the record, I don’t want the Yanks to sign Crawford. I like the Yanks’ outfield just fine as it is.

Apparently the Dodgers got in touch with the Yanks regarding a swap of Russell Martin for Frankie Cervelli but the Yanks scoffed at the offer. I’m glad because, even though he kinda sucks now, I like Cervelli. He’s young now and I think he could become a good player with time. Plus, Martin was on the 60-day DL last season with a hip injury.

Also, Martin just hit the open market as a non-tendered free agent, so the Yanks could get him and not give up anything if they really want him.
