As we here at Yanks Go Yard wrap up our “Grading the Yankees” series, we realize that no assessment can be complete without an assessment of the man putting together the roster we cheer and root for every single year: General Manager Brian Cashman. While it’s a popular sentiment for the GM to be lambasted for his free-agency failings (OK, Carl Pavano was a hot mess during his time in New York), of late, Cashman has been among the savviest GMs in the game, by shedding payroll, picking up the right players from the scrap heap, and, more importantly, not making the “obvious” move. On Thursday, July 19th, the New York Yankees began a series against the Athletics at Oakland. They lost that game, got swept in the series, and from that day until August 7th, won only 6 out of 18 games. Of course, because they are the Yankees, many fans panicked. They criticized the Yankees for performing badly in the clutch and blowing leads and Brian Cashman for failing to make bigger moves at the trade deadline. The MLB non-waiver trade deadline arrives today at 4:00 pm. There are several teams searching for the last piece of their puzzle in an effort to provide a playoff push and there are others trying to unload as much as possible looking forward to the future. The New York Yankees portray a state of contentment, but it is more a product of the perceived costs of the players available than it is that they WANT to remain out of the trade market. (more…)

Rivera spoke last Sunday about next year and how he cannot guarantee to be a part of it. Brian Cashman Proves Yet Again That He’s A Ninja

When news broke around 6 p.m. (NY time) yesterday that the Yankees had acquired outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, the whole baseball world was left with mouths agape. Even the most die-hard Yankee fan couldn’t believe what he/she was hearing despite following the team’s every move on Twitter and other news outlets. There were no rumors or whispers prior to the trade; it just came out of nowhere. (more…)
