The New York Yankees were on the unfortunate side of Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester‘s turning the corner on an otherwise forgetful season. Boston’s ace, has now won back-to-back games after a stretch with no wins in seven starts. He out-dueled David Phelps who was solid in his second effort as a fill-in for injured CC Sabathia. (more…)

Swisher leads homer-happy Yankees to 6-4 win over Red Sox

Well, if this week vs. the Texas Rangers was supposed to be a postseason preview for the New York Yankees, then the Bronx Bombers passed the test. Although they got disappointing pitching from Ivan Nova and the Yankees’ bullpen on Thursday, they were still able to win three of four from the Rangers. The reasons for that were because of their starting pitching, Derek Lowe, and opportune hitting from guys such as Nick Swisher. Now, with a little over six weeks to go, it’s time for the Yankees to pass another test and the next exam comes with a little twist of revenge.

The Yankees and the month of August

So clearly, it’s been noted that the New York Yankees have had somewhat of an unusual trend of losing games lately. Since the All-Star break, the Yankees have gone 11-11 and their streak of dominance in the MLB has been currently won over by the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds who now both hold better records than the Bombers. Even the Baltimore Orioles who sit 5.5 games out of first in the AL East are going nowhere but up, especially with the Tampa Bay Rays on their tail. Out of those 11 wins, six of them came from the softer teams in the AL such as the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays. When the Yankees have faced contending teams as of late, such as the Oakland A’s, the Yanks seem to falter a bit. Currently, they’re locked in a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers, a team that loves to remind us who won in the ALDS last year. After this, the Yankees face quite a few tough teams such as the Texas Rangers for four games, the surging Boston Red Sox, the hard-nosed Chicago White Sox along with playing the Blue Jays six times in the remainder of the month. The Yankees have no reason to really be concerned, but if they continue to play the way they have, then the concern may be legitimate. (more…)

MLB Trade Deadline: Did the Yankees measure up with the rest of the AL East?

On Tuesday at 4:00 pm, the New York Yankees made a minor yet important trade getting Casey McGehee from the Pittsburgh Pirates for soon to be DFA’d reliever Chad Qualls. It was the second deal completed by the Yankees in advance of the non-waiver deadline. The first, which you can see analysis of here, was getting Ichiro Suzuki and cash from the Seattle Mariners for two minor league pitchers, D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. The Yankees through Brian Cashman stated time and again that they would not make any major moves because of the cost factor and because they felt that they were in a good position with the roster, not to mention they expected to have Joba Chamberlain back soon (he of course has since returned) and Alex Rodriguez and Andy Pettitte back in September. Yankees’ rally falls short for second straight game, lose to Red Sox 3-2

Yankees enjoy return home, blast Red Sox 10-3

After suffering through a long road trip, winning only two of seven games, the New York Yankees were happy to be back in the Bronx last night for the first game of a three-game set with the Boston Red Sox. The ball was flying out of Yankee Stadium with each team hitting three homers, but the Yankees’ bombs came with runners on, putting them on the right side of the tally. (more…)
