CC didn’t have his best stuff but didn’t take the loss and Swish Dog went 3-for-5 with three RBI to redeem himself and give the Yanks a 5-4 walk-off win on an emotional night in the Bronx.

Prior to the game, the Yanks honored longtime owner George Steinbrenner and longtime PA announcer Bob Sheppard with a special ceremony. The shindig included video tributes to both men, a speech from Jeter before a moment of silence and Mo leaving a pair of roses on home plate — one for GMS and one for the Voice of God. Between innings the big screen in center field played video tributes to Steinbrenner and other memories, such as his appearance on Saturday Night Live from the early 90′s and player reactions to his passing.

Heading into the All-Star Break, the Yankees are sitting pretty with a 56-32 record and a two-game lead in the brutal AL East. It has been an up-and-down first half to say the least, but, obviously, winning cures all.

In addition to the best record in baseball, the Yanks (469) are second in the Majors in runs scored (Red Cox – 481), second (5.33) in the Majors in runs/game (BOS – 5.47), tops in the Majors in OBP (.353), tied for first in the Majors in OPS+ (114, BOS) and third in the Majors in WHIP (1.248). Not too shabby.

Before I forget, here are the first annual Yanks Go Yard Awards for the first half: (more…)

Believe it or not some things in life are more important than a baseball game. There are moments when wins, ERAs, runs, batting averages and blown saves don’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. Sometimes we forget how little nine innings of a silly game really matter compared to the bigger issues we face each day.

Unfortunately, today is one of those days. The world lost a great man on Sunday morning as Bob Sheppard, the longtime voice of Yankee and Giants Stadiums, passed away at his home on Long Island. He was 99.

So instead of harping on Joba Chamberlain’s epic bed-shit Saturday night, I’m going to take the time to remember one of the great men in the history of sports. (more…)

Howdy, folks, first of all, apologies for any inconvenience yesterday if you tried to access the blog and was met with an unfriendly error message, but because of the FanSided sports network’s growth (this very blog being a part of that), we needed to migrate on over to another server. Thus, no Yanks Go Yard for several hours. BUT, we’re back!

Every now and then, when time just isn’t on my side for whatever reason, I’ll yank the chain. No, not while browsing the latest pictures of scantily-clad women or various burgers throughout the world. What I mean is I’ll collect a bunch of links from around the interwebs about our beloved New York Yankees, write a sentence or two about the link, and since there will be a few links involved, it creates a chain!!! You see, you see… that’s why I call this section “Yanking The Chain”… wow, I’m a genius.

When you go to Yankees Stadium to take in a game, there are a few things you can be guaranteed of – 1) the Bleacher Creatures rule 2) the price for food and beverages will make even millionaires go, “DAMN! Is that really the price?!?!?!” and 3) Bob Sheppard will make your baseball experience feel authentic. Sheppard, the Yankees public address announcer since April 17, 1951 and who has called out the Yankees starting lineup that included such names as Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Thurman Munson, and Derek Jeter will miss Opening Day at the new Yankees Stadium due to a bronchial infection. Sheppard missed announcing all of last season and is 98 years old, but is determined to come back sometime this season. Reggie Jackson nicknamed Sheppard, “the voice of God” and let’s hope the new stadium will be blessed with Sheppard’s voice soon.
