Should the Yankees be concerned about the Rays?

The trend lately is that the Tampa Bay Rays (63-52) have always found their way into the playoffs or have been at least threatening to get in. Will the same be true for this season? The New York Yankees (68-47) had a comfortable lead over the Rays and Baltimore Orioles, but now that lead has slipped by a few games. The Rays are currently on a seven-game winning streak and they certainly seem to be making the most of it with the Yankees’ inconsistent play since mid-July. The Rays are a team that primarily focuses on their pitching and with David Price (15-4, 2.50 ERA) leading the way, it may be a rough road ahead for the Yankees who play the Rays six more times before the regular season ends. The New York Yankees have collectively played some of the best defense in the majors this season, but last night turned in a sloppy effort which coincided with Ivan Nova‘s erratic pitching. The result was three errors leading to three unearned runs which was the difference in a 7-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. (more…)

This week was special for the New York Yankees in a lot of ways. We had HOPE Week and it culminated with the always entertaining Old-Timer’s Day at the Stadium. Even though it seemed like New York blew an opportunity to win in the first game of their series against the Chicago White Sox, they were still able to salvage a split of the series thanks to timely home runs from Robinson Cano and great pitching from Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes. The New York Yankees got everything they needed last night out of CC Sabathia and the offense spearheaded by Robinson Cano provided enough support to make it seem effortless. The Yankees walked away with an important win and series victory over the first-place Rays, 5-3. (more…)
