Yanks Go Yard Series Preview Show: Yankees at Blue Jays (8/10 – 8/12)

The Yankees’ road trip started off rocky in Comerica Park and had chances to become a disaster. However, the New York Yankees were able to find a way to salvage a split from Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, and company. The game yesterday was epic. You had Joe Girardi’s ejection to liven up the team and then you throw in back-to-back home runs from Mark Teixeira and Eric Chavez. Finally, Rafael Soriano was able to close out the game despite falling into a big jam in the 9th inning. Now, the Yankees maintain a 5.5 game lead on the Baltimore Orioles as they go north of the border for the weekend.

You would think by now the New York Yankees would know how to handle a young starting pitcher. Yes, every arm is different, but after having some “can’t miss” prospects go through the rigors of the rotation/bullpen shuffle, shouldn’t they at least have an inkling of an idea about how to handle these situations? The recent struggles of the New York Yankees have made things much more interesting in the American League East. The Bombers are still in first place and this may just be one of those slumps that happens to a team in the midst of a long season. However, they no longer have a stranglehold on the division lead and it’s another team beginning to slowly make their presence known.

The New York Yankees were about due for a big game from their high-powered offense. The division leaders received the power surge they needed from their star-studded lineup, defeating the second-place Baltimore Orioles 12-3 on Wednesday to salvage one game from their three-game series at the Stadium. MLB Trade Deadline: Did the Yankees measure up with the rest of the AL East?

On Tuesday at 4:00 pm, the New York Yankees made a minor yet important trade getting Casey McGehee from the Pittsburgh Pirates for soon to be DFA’d reliever Chad Qualls. It was the second deal completed by the Yankees in advance of the non-waiver deadline. The first, which you can see analysis of here, was getting Ichiro Suzuki and cash from the Seattle Mariners for two minor league pitchers, D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar. The Yankees through Brian Cashman stated time and again that they would not make any major moves because of the cost factor and because they felt that they were in a good position with the roster, not to mention they expected to have Joba Chamberlain back soon (he of course has since returned) and Alex Rodriguez and Andy Pettitte back in September. The New York Yankees stayed under the radar of the rumor mill and surprised everyone yesterday as they pulled off a trade for Seattle Mariners outfielder and ten-time All-Star Ichiro Suzuki. With the loss of CC Sabathia until after the All-Star break and Andy Pettitte out for at least 6 weeks, the Yankees are left with a lot of question marks in their rotation. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has already come out and said that the Yankees would “prefer not to go outside (the organization)” While I agree going outside the organization is not preferred when you’re the Yankees and the expectation is the World Series or bust than you must explore all your options and I believe Matt Garza to be the best option. As the New York Yankees look to complete a sweep of the Cleveland Indians tonight let’s take a quick look back at their Interleague play in 2012 and examine the remaining schedule. Currently the team sits atop the AL East with a MLB best 45-28 record; largely due to how they performed against the NL. However, looking forward to the rest of the 1^st half and entire 2^ndhalf the Yankees have their work cut out for themselves if they expect to finish with the best record in baseball.
