A few players that could impress the Yankees in September

With September being two weeks away, the rosters for every team expand from 25 players to 40. With those extra 15 players, there may be a few that could make a case to be on the team next year instead of being in the minors. The New York Yankees have a few interesting players, especially in areas where they are hurting. The starting pitching outside of Hiroki Kuroda has been extremely sluggish, the bullpen could always use some padding and offensively, some of these guys who are playing now may not be there next year. A few players the Yankees may want to keep an eye on are Adam Warren, Brandon Laird, Justin Thomas, and David Adams as they are all on the 40-man roster. (more…)

Have the Yankees mishandled David Phelps?

You would think by now the New York Yankees would know how to handle a young starting pitcher. Yes, every arm is different, but after having some “can’t miss” prospects go through the rigors of the rotation/bullpen shuffle, shouldn’t they at least have an inkling of an idea about how to handle these situations? What can Ty Hensley bring to the Yankees?

As you may or may not know, the New York Yankees agreed about a week ago with first-round draft pick Ty Hensley on a one-year contract with a $1.2 million signing bonus. Hensley pitched for Edmond Santa Fe High School and was just drafted in June. From what scouts have seen from Hensley, the kid has nothing but positives about him. At 18, Hensley definitely has time to adapt to the Yankee way of baseball, but when he is up here, how much will he affect the team? Will it be positive or negative? All these questions and more will not be answered for awhile. For now, Hensley finds himself pitching in the minors, but has set himself a goal to be pitching in the majors by 21. Should The Yankees Trade For Matt Garza?

With the loss of CC Sabathia until after the All-Star break and Andy Pettitte out for at least 6 weeks, the Yankees are left with a lot of question marks in their rotation. Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has already come out and said that the Yankees would “prefer not to go outside (the organization)” While I agree going outside the organization is not preferred when you’re the Yankees and the expectation is the World Series or bust than you must explore all your options and I believe Matt Garza to be the best option. David Phelps and others in the Yankees’ 2013 rotation?

The one thing that the New York Yankees have been blessed with so far this season is the starting pitching. A lot of the Yankees’ starting pitching in previous years has never been as sharp, especially with multiple pitchers. Phil Hughes has been absolutely dominating his opponents in his previous starts. Ivan Nova has been lowering his ERA significantly. The rest of the rotation with CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda and Andy Pettitte has been the major core of the pitching staff, but here’s the reality, guys get older. Kuroda will be 38 going into next season., Pettitte just turned 40 this month (and is now on the 60-day DL) and Sabathia is going to 32 in July. However, Sabathia will more than likely stay with New York until his career is over, so that’s one bit of the core we can keep. Looking forward without veterans like Kuroda and Pettitte is hard, but not impossible. What we saw from David Phelps in his brief few games this season impressed the Yankees. Phelps is currently back on the 25-man roster so we’ll see what can do in the meantime. Though, looking at 2013, expect Phelps to be a major part of the rotation, even if he were to be the fifth man. There’s also the possibility of signing a free agent. The big free agent on the market after this season will be Cole Hamels. Could the Yankees sign Hamels and have Phelps ready for next year?

It was a forgettable night for the New York Yankees on many fronts. Their rookie pitcher, Adam Warren, made his major league debut which lasted all of 2 1/3 innings and once reliable reliever, Cory Wade, practically duplicated the same effort in his appearance. Their best pitcher of the night was reserve outfielder Dewayne Wise and that should just about tell the story. (more…)

Could Adam Warren Surprise Like Ivan Nova?

Early Wednesday morning the New York Yankees put their ace, CC Sabathia, on the disabled list with a Grade 1 left adductor (groin) strain. The injury will keep him out until after the All-Star break, which is approximately two starts according to manager Joe Girardi. However, the injuries kept piling up yesterday as Indians first baseman Casey Kotchman hit a comebacker that struck Andy Pettitte‘s ankle. As Pettitte went for the ball, it appeared his leg gave out and he hit the ground in pain. The workhorse that he is, he tried to stay in the game, threw a few practice pitches, but was ultimately taken out of the game as he was grimacing and limping after each pitch. Later it was revealed that he suffered a fractured ankle and will be on the shelf for at least six weeks (he’s an old man, give him two months). (more…)

The New York Yankees received bad news yesterday when CC Sabathia was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained groin. The news went from bad to worse when Andy Pettitte took a liner off the left ankle in the fifth inning of yesterday’s 5-4 win over the Cleveland Indians resulting in a broken ankle and will be out a minimum of six weeks. The one-million dollar question is which starter will the Yankees ride while the top two starters are down? My answer may surprise you. (more…)
