Players selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Draft are never a sure thing. There are many early round selections that don’t pan out and numerous lower round picks who attain success in the big leagues. There are qualities teams look for when evaluating talent; athletic abilities beyond hitting or throwing a baseball, a hard work ethic, determination, humility and confidence. Players who exhibit these characteristics tend to be among the more successful in the game. The New York Yankees extensively scouted second round pick (89^th overall) Austin Aune and ultimately drafted him because he possesses all these qualities and more. (more…)

Yankees stick to draft plan, continue to strengthen already deep system

The New York Yankees have gone to great lengths over the last several seasons to strengthen their farm system and emphasize the importance of growing talent in the minor leagues through the amateur draft and international signings. While fans of the other 29 MLB teams view the Yankees as a cash cow, anyone who truly examines the club can see that the Yankees are in the midst of balancing young talent with pricey superstars. Yankees select center fielder Austin Aune and catcher Peter O’Brien in second round

The New York Yankees chose to go up the middle with their second round picks in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft. With the 89th pick overall, the Yanks chose center fielder Austin Aune from Argyle High School (Texas) and then with the 94th pick selected University of Miami catcher Peter O’Brien. (more…)

The New York Yankees found themselves in a positive situation during last night’s draft as Ty Hensley, an 18-year-old, 6’4″ 220 right-handed senior from Edmond Santa Fe High School in Oklahoma was available to them after 29 selections in the first round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Draft. (more…)
