It’s been an interesting week or so in sports with a ton going on- the Stanley Cup playoffs, the NBA playoffs, and drama at the Players Championship, not to mention the usual baseball happenings. It’s no surprise that there were, as usual, the ups and downs and early-exits and underwhelming disappointments associated with each of these events. It’s even less surprising that there’s been a ton of talk about players who “failed,” whose legacies were affected, and of course, the most heated debate of all: who deserves the blame for the failure to advance, the loss, the end of the season. All of which begs a interesting question: do we hold players that we like to a different standard than players we don’t like?

Mr Consistent on the Yankees continues to be just that. Hiroki Kuroda dominated the Toronto Blue Jays yet again, improving his record to 6-2 as the Yankees stopped their two game losing streak and shut out the Jays 5-0. Kuroda allowed just two hits over his eight innings of work. His ERA is now 1.99, which is fourth in the AL. (more…)

YGY Series Preview Show: Blue Jays-Yankees (5/17-5/19)

The New York Yankees (25-16) hit a little bit of a rough patch to start the homestand as they lost two out of three to the Seattle Mariners. Despite stealing the first game from Felix Hernandez, the Mariners were still able to hit the long ball with outfielders Michael Morse and Raul Ibanez hitting four combined home runs in the series. Seattle also put up a 7-run first inning on Phil Hughes, who didn’t even finish the first inning on Wednesday.

Also, the Bronx Bombers had some injury concerns occur during this series as they await test results on pitcher Andy Pettitte (tightness in his back) and catcher Chris Stewart (groin injury). Plus, Travis Hafner is still out of the lineup. However, the positive of the Mariners’ series is the debut of third baseman David Adams and the return of outfielder Curtis Granderson. Adams had a RBI double and Granderson had three hits in the loss on Thursday. Now, the Yankees will finish up the homestand with a familiar team that they have already seen seven times this season.

However, John Gibbons‘ team has won four straight games and seems to be on the right track. They got good news at the beginning of this week off-the-field as they found out that shortstop Jose Reyes could be back as soon as late June after he suffered an ankle injury the first week of the season. On-the-field, the team swept the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants in a mini two-game series while outscoring them 21-9. The Blue Jays are strong at hitting the ball out of the park with first baseman Edwin Encarnacion leading the way with 11 home runs. As far as the pitching goes, Casey Janssen is 10-10 in save opportunities and Sunday’s starter, R.A Dickey, has six quality starts already on the season. Will the Blue Jays this weekend play like the team that has won four straight games or the team that is 1-6 against the Yankees so far this season?

Dellin Betances: Out of Options, But Is That a Bad Thing?

Lost in this weekend’s Yankees activities- a sweep of the Royals, Eduardo Nunez being placed on the disabled list, the kerfuffle between Mariano Rivera and Joba Chamberlain- was some interesting news out of Scranton, when the Yankees officially ended Dellin Betances’ career as a starting pitcher. The one-time 43rd prospect in all of Major League Baseball will be officially out of options next year, meaning that if he does not make the 25-man roster, the Yankees will be forced to place him on waivers and risk losing a valuable depth player. Though it is a far-cry from the promise his once showed as a member of the “Killer B’s,” this move might actually make a lot of sense for the Yankees moving forward.
