In one of the lamest showings of trash talk in the history of professional sports, Mets closer Frank Francisco called the Yankees “chickens” prior to this weekend’s Subway Series.

I can’t wait to face those chickens. I want to strike out the side against them. I’ve done it before.

Whoa. Take it easy, Gary Payton. My five-year-old nieces sling better insults than that. Frank Frank could’ve called the Yankees ‘big, stupid doo-doo heads’ and I would’ve had more respect for him. I have no problem with talking trash, but if you’re going to run your mouth at least make it a good jab.

Furthermore, if you’re going to call a team chicken at least say why you’re calling them that. This tool refused to elaborate on why he said it: (more…)

We here at Yanks Go Yard want to wish all of the dads out there a happy Father’s Day! Personally, I know that if it wasn’t for my dad I wouldn’t be a Yankee fan so I want to use this day to be grateful that he raised me right.

On a more serious note, there are a lot of people out there who don’t have the privilege of being able to see their old men, so, if you are able to, use this day to give your pops a hug and say thanks. Forget about that time he wouldn’t let you stay out past curfew or didn’t buy you a car when you got your license, remember all the things he HAS done for you.

On a less serious note, let’s give thanks to our father who art in heaven. Deliver us from evil (the Red Sox): (more…)

The good folks over at Goodman Media International sent me an advanced copy of Sports Illustrated’s new book, “Pro Files: Baseball,” a few weeks ago, and I finally had a chance to sit down and read it a few days ago.

When I first started it I almost threw up. Chapter 1 is about Dustin Pedroia, and his ugly mug was staring right back at me when I began reading. Regardless of how hideous Dusty looks, the book still provides interesting insight about his background and tips on how to play like he does.

It also features other major league stars like Justin Verlander, Albert Pujols, Joe Mauer, Justin Upton, Evan Longoria, Roy Halladay and eight other players. They saved the best for last as on page 90 they profile The Great Mariano.

The book provides some pretty interesting facts about Mo (did you know His favorite movie is The Rock and His favorite team to watch is the Brazilian men’s national soccer team?), including how He discovered the cutter. It provides some stats — all of His ML records — and touches on His youth as the son of a fisherman in Panama.

The book is pretty cool and gives you facts about some of the biggest stars in the game. It’s definitely worth checking out, in my opinion.

When the YES Network began programming in 2002 there may have been some question as to whether the channel would find its niche in the already saturated New York sports market, never mind whether it would make some sort of national “stamp”.

ESPN was already a dominant and expanding force, after all, while FOX was rolling out regional sports networks and MSG seemed to cover whatever was left over in the New York area.

The Yankees and their late, great owner George Steinbrenner have never been ones to find reasons NOT to do something, however. The greatness of the franchise comes from its willingness to make bold moves, most of which have worked out.

Ten years later, you can put YES Network into the win column for the organization. Along with pulling in healthy viewership for the team, the channel also boasts fine programs like Yankeeography, Centerstage, SportsMoney and many others.

It also had to be more than coincidence the New Jersey Nets, which YES began a partnership with, advanced to consecutive NBA Finals appearances after many years of struggling.

And one of the genius moves of the YES Network was simulcasting the already popular “Mike and the Mad Dog” radio program from WFAN. Although now split up, the pair was the best in the sports-talk business and became a national brand too. How ironic, it must have been, for Chris Russo, aka “Mad Dog” to get paid in part from a team he loathed. (Mike Francesa continued the program in solo fashion on WFAN/Yes Network and the show hasn’t missed a beat).

Russo’s not alone in hating the Yankees though, and that’s fine. One has no choice but to respect their remarkable 27 World Series titles and the success of the YES Network, however.

There’s something special about being a New York Yankees first baseman both historically, with the likes of Lou Gehrig and in recent years with Chris Chambliss, Don Mattingly and Tino Martinez.
Mark Teixeira, who signed with the Yankees as a free agent in December 2008 after being wooed by several teams, has fit in just as well as his predecessors with over 30 homers in each of his three seasons in the Bronx.

Mark Teixeira-wiki

Teixeira, who caught the 27th out in the Yanks 27th World Series win, also collected over 100 RBI in all three campaigns.
Along with the huge numbers, and much like his predecessors, Teixeira comes across as a good guy. That’s probably because he IS a good guy … you can just tell. Tex seems so at ease as a player and as a person, yes … again like his predecessors.
Teixeira seemed really at home, for instance, on a recent appearance on HGTV’s My Favorite Place. It might have something to do with the fact Teixeira WAS at home … a 13,000 square foot mansion-like home in Greenwich, CT. He sported the same cool, calm demeanor in showing off the five-bedroom, eight bathroom house as he does in patrolling first base for the Yanks.
His office is possibly the “coolest” place in his house, with pictures, baseballs and other memorabilia, including a photo snapped of him with President George W. Bush (the program showed the photo for several seconds, but if he discussed the pic that part is on an editing floor somewhere).
It was a treat to see Tex in such a venue, and kind of helps get me through a long stretch, if you’ll pardon the pun, before the season starts.

I bet you fancy yourself quite the Yankee fan, right? You probably think you know everything about the team. You can name every year they won the World Series, you watch every game all season and you even cut school/work in 2009 for the ticker-tape parade. And when someone asks “have the Yankees ever worn a different style of uniform,” you say “no, dumbass. They’ve been rocking the pinstripes/grey roads forever” and roll your eyes.

Well get off your high horse, asshole, because it turns out they did alter them a little bit back in the day. The always-great Uni Watch did some sleuthing and discovered that for a brief, unknown period in the early ’40s the team wore road jerseys that had “New York” in a straight line across the chest. This is, of course, an aberration of the road jerseys you and I have come to know and love with “New York” in an arching font across the chest.

So I guess you kind of had a point with that aforementioned hypothetical situation where you rolled your eyes at that guy, but you really need to chill with that. Everyone thinks you’re a pretentious jerk.

Check out the Uni Watch post and you might learn a thing or two about the team.

I’m a couple of years late on this, but I hadn’t seen it until the other day so back off. One of the most underrated characters on the internet, Batting Stance Guy, has focused his talents on the 2009 World Champion New York Yankees. As anyone who knows BSG’s work can tell you, this guy’s impressions are dead on. He really captures the mannerisms of each player.

My favorite has got to be either Robbie Cano, Johnny Damon’s spastic leg kicks/gimpy running, the Tex crotch grab or Swish Dog. Although I couldn’t tell you if his Xavier Nady is on point because I practically forgot he was on that team.

Hopefully this video will ease your hangover and give you a couple of laughs. Enjoy.
