In last year’s draft the Yankees selected an Oklahoman pitcher named Ty Hensley with the 30th overall pick and signed him for $1.2 million. It was an area of need for the Yankees as many of their younger pitchers in recent years haven’t panned out. The 6’4″, 220 pound 18-year-old appeared in five game in rookie ball last season and his future looks very bright with the Yankees. (more…)

With the plethora of injuries exposing the New York Yankees this spring, it’s a wonder why they won’t go out and try to help shore up some of their deficiencies through the trade market. Many people have pointed to losing Nick Swisher via free agency as part of the current problem, as his versatility of playing both RF and 1B would’ve at least kept other players from having to move around. Roster flexibility is a necessity in today’s game and Colorado Rockies’ Michael Cuddyer could be the player who could help the Yanks through these early season injuries. (more…)

You know, it could just be a fluke that the recent injuries to Phil Hughes, Curtis Granderson, and Mark Teixeira occurred. On the other hand though, it could reveal a trend and/or a glimpse into as to how the 2013 season will shake out for the New York Yankees. Injuries are a part of every season, sometimes a team gets lucky, but other times, like this Spring Training for the Bombers, they strike quickly and have lasting implications for at least the early season. Brett Marshall has been with the New York Yankees since 2008 when he was drafted in the sixth round. The 6’0″, 195-pound righthander from Texas has slowly, but steadily moved up through the ranks within the club’s farm system. However, his journey hasn’t been without some hiccups. Replacing Curtis Granderson: The Internal Options

Well, that was disappointing. With Curtis Granderson on the shelf for 10 weeks, maybe more, the Yankees will undoubtedly be looking to replace him. The 31-year-old outfielder was hit in the wrist from Toronto Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ and didn’t appear as though Granderson would miss any significant. However, an MRI later revealed he broke his forearm and now the Yankees are calmly scrambling to replace his production. Many have linked former Yankee, Alfonso Soriano, but is he the real answer for the Yankees? We hear it almost every single year about players who are just terrible coming out of the gate. They could tear the cover off the ball during Spring Training, but once Opening Day rolls around they leave their bat back in Florida (or Arizona if you’re on the West Coast) for a month. Prospect Outlook: Slade Heathcott

If there’s one thing you can say about the Yankees farm system, it’s that they have a good stable of promising outfielders. Count Slade Heathcott among those promising outfielders, despite not being healthy for the better part of a few years. His grittiness will draw comparisons to Brett Gardner, but his overall tools project him to be better in all phases of the game than the current Yankees left fielder.
