The Yankees have played half a dozen games so far, and their power numbers are very impressive. Spring Training is back, which means baseball season is around the corner.

The Yankees have opened 2017 Spring Training with a 5-1 record. While the games don’t count and some guys have football like numbers on, they still show a glimpse into the future. There are a lot of new faces, like Chris Carter, Matt Holliday, and Clint Frazier, as well as some familiar ones like Greg Bird, Gary Sanchez, and Aaron Judge. Both the new and familiar faces seem to be doing something that the 2016 team could not; hit the ball for power.

The 2016 team ranked 19th in home runs and 23rd in RBI throughout the Major Leagues. Through six Spring Training games, the Yankees rank first in both home runs and RBI, with 11 and 35 respectably. Their 39 runs are also a Spring Training best. Greg Bird and Thairo Estrada lead the way with two home runs each. Estrada, Starlin Castro, and Clint Frazier are tied with a team-high four RBI. The Yankees 13 doubles are also third best in the league.

Yankees Struggled For Run Production In 2016

The struggle for power and run production was a challenge the Yankees cold not overcome in 2016. The Yankees two best power hitters, Carlos Beltran and Gary Sanchez, played half a season each. Something the team needs for 2017 is a consistent lineup that can produce and drive in runs. While it is early in, not only Spring Training but in the baseball season in general, there are a lot of good signs.

More from Yanks Go Yard

Thairo Estrada is making a name for himself, homering in two of his first three plate appearances. Greg Bird looks healthy and ready to compete again at first base. Chris Carter has more walks than strikeouts, which is shocking. Aaron Judge hit a ball that is still orbiting the Earth. Arizona Fall League

MVP Gleyber Torres has hit safely in three of his four plate appearances, with a pair of doubles. So far, there are a lot of positives being shown early on in the Spring Training process.

Spring Training is all about finding out what players can do the things as a team you lacked the year before. It could be new guys beating out veterans for a position, or a veteran making an adjustment and teaching younger players a few things.

So far, the Yankees seem to have their problem from 2016 figured out; scoring and hitting the ball for power. Hopefully, the team can learn from their past mistakes, and the new Baby Bombers can step up and have a successful 2017.
