Yankees: Brian Cashman Suddenly Goes Political On Us

Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman took an unusual step venturing into the realm of politics today, reportedly telling the New York Daily News that Donald Trump’s selection of Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, was an “excellent choice”. Never mind the fact, though, that it’s been three decades since the two of them since they had any contact with each other. Brian, say it ain’t so.

If I’m not mistaken, the last time the Yankees and politics were used in the same sentence was when President Ronald Reagan pardoned Steinbrenner for his convictions in a case involving campaign donations to President Richard Nixon and other politicians. That was not a shining moment in Yankees history, and neither is this move by Cashman.

Understand, this has nothing to do with the qualifications (or lack thereof) of Gorsuch to hold this lifetime position as a Supreme Court Justice. But it has everything to do with the fact that Brian Cashman’s job is to be the General Manager of the New York Yankees. And instead of answering the call from the Daily News, and I hope it went down that way and not the other way around, he might have instead been thinking of a backup plan in the event that Michael Pineda implodes before May.

And, there’s also another glaring fault in his thinking. And that has to do with the fact that the last time Cashman and Gorsuch laid eyes on each other was in 1985 when they both graduated from a prestigious high school in Washington, DC, Georgetown Prep. Perhaps knowing that he was going off the deep end with his comments, Cashman made sure the News knew that there were only 100 students in the graduating class, so “everyone knew each other well”.

And I think that’s funny because while I can still name every position player on my high school varsity baseball team at Roy C Ketcham High School in Wappingers Falls, NY, who I got to know pretty well too, but I sure as hell wouldn’t vouch for any of them a half-century later. Nor, would I expect any of them to vouch for me.

This is a “story” that should get a one line mention in Mike Lupica’s Sunday column in the Daily News. Maybe it’s a slow Yankees news day around these parts, and that’s why it’s one of Google’s top featured stories.

There have been rumors in the past that Brian Cashman has political aspirations. That’s all well and good, and I wish him the best. But right now, he’s the General Manager of the New York Yankees, which should be a big enough job to keep him busy, at least for now.
