On last night’s Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, we preview the Yankees first series of the 2nd half against the Boston Red Sox

On last night’s episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, I started off the episode by talking about the All-Star Game this week and my takeaways from what happened in San Diego. Plus, I gave my take on the column by Wallace Matthews from ESPN New York about how the Yankees are divided on whether or not they should sell before the August 1 trade deadline.

Tonight, the New York Yankees (44-44) begin a ten game homestand against the Boston Red Sox (49-38). The Red Sox are two games behind the Orioles in the AL East, but president Dave Dombrowski has been busy making trades over the last week or so.

Dombrowski acquired Aaron Hill from the Brewers to help out the bench, Brad Ziegler from the Diamondbacks to help the bullpen with closer Craig Kimbrel and reliever Junichi Tazawa on the disabled list, and starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz (last night) from the Padres for top pitching prospect Anderson Espinoza.

The story of the Red Sox has been their offense, which leads the American League in runs scored, batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Their lineup had four All-Stars in San Diego on Tuesday, including designated hitter David Ortiz (.332, 22 home runs, 72 RBI’s).

By trading for Pomeranz last night, the Red Sox have appeared to improve a rotation that has an ERA of 4.72 (ninth in the American League). Their lone pitching All-Star wasn’t David Price (9-6, 4.34 ERA). Instead, it was knuckleballer Steven Wright (10-5, 2.68 ERA).

To talk more about the Red Sox, my guest was Justin Gorman from Sons of Sam Horn. Justin gave his take on the Red Sox recent trades and whether or not they will make one more move for a starting pitcher. Plus, could the Red Sox and Yankees be ideal trade partners? Here are more of the topics we discussed:

  • Does this mean the Red Sox won’t trade for Rich Hill
  • How would Justin grade Boston’s first half?
  • Pitching Matchup Breakdown
  • Steven Wright (Tonight’s Red Sox starter) the de facto ace of the Red Sox in the 1st half?
  • Michael Pineda (Tonight’s Yankees starter) has given up seven runs in his last four home starts
  • Expectations for Eduardo Rodriguez (Tomorrow’s Red Sox starter)
  • CC Sabathia (Tomorrow’s Yankees starter) has given up 21 runs in his last four outings
  • Which David Price will show up for the Red Sox on Sunday night?
  • Masahiro Tanaka pitching Sunday night for the Yankees on extra rest
