Yankees Recap: Severino Lit Up for Six Runs, Lasts Only Three Innings

The New York Yankees (8-10) were in Texas for their second game of the series against the Rangers (10-10). Still searching for his first win of the season, Luis Severino (0-2, 4.86) was on the bump for New York as A.J. Griffin (2-0, 3.18) got the start for Texas. The Bombers are still playing with a short bench while Alex Rodriguez and Aaron Hicks continue to work their way back from minor injuries.

It was Severino’s first career start against the Rangers, but they broke the ice in the first inning. An RBI-single from Prince Fielder scored Nomar Mazara to give Texas an early 1-0 lead.

Ronald Torreyes, playing 3B in place of Chase Headley, collected the Yankees’ first hit of the night in the third. He lined a hanging curveball into center field, but the team couldn’t rally behind the base hit.

Mazara’s second single of the game, followed by a double from Adrian Beltre and an intentional walk to Fielder, loaded the bases for Ian Desmond in the bottom of the third. Sevy and Desmond battled into a 3-2 count, but the young pitcher lost the fight by issuing a walk that scored the Rangers’ second run. Two more runners would score on Mitch Moreland‘s single to center, and a wild pitch to the next batter plated the fifth run against Severino. Elvis Andrus increased the gap to 6-0 with an RBI-single to left field. Carlos Beltran bailed Sevy out of further trouble with a spectacular diving catch to end the inning.

The Yankees didn’t send Severino back to the mound in the fourth inning. Instead, it was Ivan Nova who came into the game and induced three ground-ball outs in only five pitches to speed the game along.

Desmond’s third home-run of the year buried the Yankees further into the ground. At the end of five innings the score was 7-0 and New York had only one hit.

Back-to-back doubles in the sixth made it 8-0 as the beatdown continued.

The Yankees countered in the seventh when Mark Teixeira drove in their first run on a deflected single up the middle of the infield. A double play and a strikeout would prevent the team from chipping away at the deficit; they were down 8-1 with two innings left to play.

After nine unpleasant innings, New York ultimately dropped the contest 10-1. The other two runs for the Rangers came from a wild pitch by Nova in the seventh and a solo homer smacked by Rougned Odor in the eighth.

The Yankees will play one more game in Texas before having an off-day and traveling to Boston for Friday’s series opener. CC Sabathia (1-1, 5.28) will square off against Martin Perez (0-2, 4.50), and fans can catch Wednesday’s game on ESPN, YES Network, or MLB.TV Premium (subs. req’d) at 8:05 PM ET.
