The Yankees used two solo home runs in the top of the ninth to help end the game in a 4-4 tie against the New York Mets

After being shut out on back-to-back days, the Yankees were finally able to score some runs this afternoon in Port St. Lucie against the New York Mets. Despite plenty of defensive mistakes today, including three errors by the Bronx Bombers, the Yankees rallied in the top of the ninth by hitting a pair of solo home runs. In the end, the two teams played to a 4-4, ten inning tie.

The starting pitching matchup for today’s game was Ivan Nova vs. Jacob deGrom. The Yankees got on the board first in the top of the third against deGrom. With two outs and Aaron Hicks on second via a double, Chase Headley hit a single to right that drove in Hicks to put the Yankees in front, 1-0.

As for Nova, he went three innings, gave up no runs on three hits (all singles), struck out one batter, and walked one on 36 pitches. After Nova, the Yankees’ next pitcher was James Kaprielian. The first round pick from last year’s draft retired the Mets in order in the fourth (Yoenis Cespdes, Lucas Duda, and Neil Walker), but he ran into trouble in the fifth.

With one out, Alejandro de Aza drew a walk and Kevin Plawecki singled to center. Then, T.J. Rivera doubled to left field to drive both runners in and give the Mets a 2-1 lead on a play where Hicks overthrew the cutoff man.

After Dustin Ackley couldn’t field a ground ball by Curtis Granderson (one of two Ackley misplays today at second base), Asdrubal Cabrera hit a line drive to first that Deibinson Romero knocked down. Romero threw the ball home, but Gary Sanchez dropped the throw that would have had Rivera out at the plate. Yoenis Cespedes would drive in another run on a single to put the Mets up 4-1. Kaprielian went 1.2 innings, gave up two earned runs (four runs) on four hits, walked two, and struck out one.

The Yankees got a run back in the top of the seventh. Chris Parmelee led off the inning with a double against Akeel Morris and he would later score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-2. The second defensive error of the day came in the bottom of the inning when Mateo misplayed a groundball.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Yankees cut the lead to 4-3 when Kyle Higashioka crushed a solo home run to left off new Mets’ reliever, Antonio Bastardo. Two batters later, Sebastian Valle hit his first home run of the spring on a solo shot to left center that tied the game at four.

The two teams agreed to play an extra inning and it was the Mets who had the best chance to win the game. The Mets loaded the bases via a single, a walk, and a hit by pitch by Jacob Lindgren (also made an error on a pickoff throw). However, Plawecki ended up flying out to center to officially end the game in a tie.

Nick GoodyJohnny BarbatoBranden Pinder, and Mark Montgomery were the other Yankees pitchers who got in the game today. They combined to give up two hits and strie out three batters over 4.1 innings. Pinder ran into trouble in the eighth with a couple of walks, but he got Plawecki to ground into a 5-4-3 double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Next Game: The New York Yankees will have two squads in action tomorrow afternoon (both games at 1:05 PM ET). One squad will be in Sarasota to take on the Baltimore Orioles when Bryan Mitchell takes on Tyler Wilson. The other squad will be at home in Tampa as Nathan Eovaldi takes on Drew Hutchison and the Toronto Blue Jays. Aroldis Chapman is expected to make his Yankees’ spring debut tomorrow.
