New York Yankees Re-Sign RHP Prospect Domingo German

After being non-tendered earlier in the month, the Yankees have re-signed 23-year old right hand pitching prospect Domingo German to a minor league contract.

The young right hander was acquired by the Yankees last off-season as part of the Nathan Eovaldi trade. Before he could log a significant amount of innings in spring training, German was shut down with Tommy John surgery, causing him to sit out his entire first season in pinstripes. To make room on their 40-man roster earlier this winter, the Yankees cut ties with the young right hander, but now he’s back in the organization on a minor league deal and ready to show what he’s capable of.

At the time he was traded to the Yankees, the 23-year old native of the Dominican Republic was rated the Marlins #6 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline. In 2014 he started 25 games for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in the South Atlantic League (Low Class-A) and pitched to a 9-3 record with a 2.48 ERA and 113 strikeouts.

It’s no coincidence that the Yankees announced the re-signing of German just one day after the 2015 MLB Rule 5 Draft. Had he remained in the Yankees farm system but not on the 40-man roster he would have been Rule 5 eligible and probably would have joined Jake Cave and Evan Rutckyj as players on their way out of New York via the Rule 5 Draft. The Yankees did the same with Slade Heathcott and Vicente Campos just one year ago.

Being that German last pitched for Greensboro in 2014, my guess is the Yankees will try and work him into the High-A rotation down in Tampa when he comes back healthy. His health going forward will determine where he goes from there.
