Yanks Go Yard Radio Show Rewind: Breaking Down The Aaron Hicks Trade

On last night’s episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, I started off the episode by giving my take on the New York Yankees moves this past week. During the GM meetings in Boca Raton, Florida, Brian Cashman traded away Jose Pirela to the Padres for pitching prospect Ronald Herrera and dealt catcher John Ryan Murphy to the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Aaron Hicks.

Our first guest of the evening was James Terry, who writes about the Twins for Baseball Essential. James and I gave our initial thoughts on why this trade is a win for both teams. Then, we talked about what Hicks might bring to the Yankees. With Cashman hinting that Hicks might be more than a Chris Young replacement, will Yankees’ fans be disappointed if he is one of the starting outfielders Opening Day? Plus, why has Hicks’ average been bad away from Target Field (.205 this season) as opposed to a .307 average at home.

In addition to talking about Hicks, we looked at Murphy’s new opportunity in Minnesota. As of now, he is set to be the starting catcher down the road with Kurt Suzuki entering the final year of his deal. Finally, James and I talked about what other moves Minnesota might make this winter as well the impact of winning the posting bid for Korean first baseman, Byung-Ho Park. Does it mean that Joe Mauer is now a designated hitter for the remainder of his contract?

My next guest was Brady Farkas from Sodo Mojo and one of the hosts at 104.5 ESPN Radio in Albany. Brady and I discussed the trade rumors that were reported this week involving Brett Gardner and the Seattle Mariners. How would Gardner fit in with Seattle if that trade occurred? Plus, we talk about the hypothetical trade scenario if the two sides ever decided to do a Jacoby EllsburyRobinson Cano swap.

After talking about Gardner, Brady and I talked about the Mariners hiring Jerry Dipoto as their general manager and Scott Servais as their manager. What are Brady’s thoughts on the trades Seattle has made already, such as acquiring Joaquin Benoit from the Padres and when they got three player back from the Rays, including starter Nate Karns. Finally, Brady gives his thoughts on the Yankees’ situation, the Andrew Miller trade rumors, and should New York actually be looking to trade Gardner this winter since he is one of their own homegrown players?
