New York Yankees Recap: Win Number 10,000 Put On Hold
After a fairly easy series against the White Sox, the New York Yankees hosted the Red Sox in the Bronx as they finish their last home stand of the season. The Yankees had a chance to clinch a playoff birth tonight with a win and losses from the three teams contending for the second Wild Card spot. On the mound for the Yankees was Ivan Nova and for the Red Sox it was rookie Eduardo Rodriguez.
Nova was coming off a solid start in Toronto going 5.2 innings and giving up just one run. It seemed for the most part he was feeling the same way tonight aside from a couple mistakes. Tonight Nova’s line would be seven IP, four ER, and seven strikeouts. All four runs would come from two-run shots by Travis Shaw and Jackie Bradley Jr. (who is on fire right now). Nova maybe went an inning too long as he did seem to digress in the seventh which ultimately led to Bradley Jr. taking advantage of it. However, Nova has looked much better in the last two games than he did before he was removed from the rotation. At this point, with Nathan Eovaldi still out, that’s all they can really ask him from now on.
Other pitchers for the Yankees were Andrew Bailey,Chris Capuano, Caleb Cotham, James Pazos, and Nick Rumbelow (yes, all after the seven innings Nova pitched). Capuano recorded two strikeouts and Cotham gave up a home run.
Despite nine hits the Yankees only run would come in the bottom of the first from an Alex Rodriguez sac-fly bringing in Jacoby Ellsbury. Tomorrow the Yankees look to get win number 10,000 with Michael Pineda on the hill. Pineda has been on a hot streak since returning from injury and looks to continue. Also the updated playoff picture shows the Yankees having to win just two games the rest of the season for a guarenteed playoff birth.
