Yanks Go Yard Radio Show Rewind: Yankees-Blue Jays Preview (9/21-9/23)

On last night’s special edition of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, we did our usual preview show and combined It with a postgame show after the Sunday night game on ESPN. The New York Yankees (82-66) went into Citi Field and were able to take two out of three games from the New York Mets.

After dropping the series opener on Friday night, the Yankees’ offense scored 16 runs in the final two games, including four home runs (Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann, Dustin Ackley, and Greg Bird). As for the pitching, Masahiro Tanaka, Michael Pineda, and CC Sabathia combined to give up three earned runs against a very good Mets’ offense.

Now, the Yankees are in Toronto to take on the Blue Jays (85-64) in arguably the biggest series of their season. Due to the Blue Jays losing two out of three games to the Red Sox this weekend, the Bronx Bombers are now 2.5 games back in the AL East while holding a four game lead on the Astros for the first Wild Card spot.

This season, the Blue Jays are 11-5 against the Yankees, but New York took two out of three games from Toronto in their last series at the Rogers Centre. For this series, the Blue Jays will be without shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who is out the remainder of the season with a cracked shoulder blade. However, the Yankees have injury concerns of their own. Before last night’s game, the team announced that Masahiro Tanaka will not start on Wednesday night because of a hamstring strain he suffered running the bases on Friday.

Now, New York will be sending Adam Warren (tonight’s starter) and Ivan Nova to the mound against a Blue Jays’ lineup that has 95 home runs since the All-Star. This month, Jose Bautista (.251, 36 HR, 104 RBI’s) is hitting .306 in 18 games with five home runs and 16 RBI’s. Of course, this is a Blue Jays’ lineup that still has the frontrunner for AL MVP in Josh Donaldson (.299, 39 HR, 120 RBI’s).

On the first part of this episode, I spoke with Jeff Goldenberg, a staff writer over at Jays Journal. Jeff talked about Drew Hutchison being demoted to the bullpen, the impact the bullpen moves have had on left-handed specialist Brett Cecil (no earned runs allowed in his last 22 games) and Russell Martin getting used to catching R.A. Dickey. Plus, we broke down the pitching matchups as Toronto will send David Price, Marco Estrada, and Marcus Stroman to the mound in this series.

Then, for the second part of this episode, we had two excellent guests. The first was Billy Brost, the founder of Baseball Magazine and former co-editor at YGY. The second is one of our newest staff writers, Harrison Marder. The three of us recapped the Subway Series, gave our thoughts on the Matt Harvey situation, and if the Yankees were to play a one-game playoff, who would we trust the most to start that game, and which team would New York not want to see go up against them on October 6.
