The New York Yankees won game two of the weekend subway series with the New York Mets behind home runs by Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann and strong pitching by Michael Pineda.

The Yankees got busy right away in the first inning. Jacoby Ellsbury dumped a bloop single into right-centerfield. Brett Gardner stepped in and deposited a single in almost the exact same spot. Carlos Beltran then came up looking to get the Yanks on the board. Beltran drilled a three-run home run to right field off of Mets´starter Noah Syndergaard to make it 3-0.

Brian McCann added to the Yankees lead with a two run home run in the sixth to increase the Yankees lead to 5-0. McCann is closing in on Yogi Berra´s club record of 30 home runs in a season by a catcher. McCann now has 26.

Michael Pineda sailed along before leaving the game with one out in the sixth inning. Justin Wilson came in to close out the sixth. He struck out four batters in an inning and one-third of work.. Wilson had a tremendous battle with Daniel Murphy. Murphy started to leave the batter´s box on an apparent strike three. But when the umpire neglected to raise his arm, Murphy quickly got in the box with the grin of a kid who got two packs of baseball cards for the price of one.

The Yankees missed an opportunity to add to their lead in the top of the ninth. Chase Headley was on second base with two out. Alex Rodriguez came up, but flied out to end the threat.

Pineda allowed four hits and struck out four without allowing a run. The Yankees face the Mets in the final game of the series tomorrow. After that, they head to Toronto for a three-game series with the Blue Jays. They look to build on their strong performance in the final game against the Jays at Yankee Stadium last Sunday.
