ICYMI: Yanks’ Come Alive In 9th To Stun Rays

After losing three-out-of-four against the Blue Jays, the New York Yankees took a trip down to St Pete for a three game set against the Rays. On the mound for the Yankees was CC Sabathia looking to give his team another good start (whether it be five or six innings), and for the Rays, it was Erasmo Ramirez. This is a series the Yankees really need to win with the Jays down in Atlanta facing the Braves, in hopes of not falling back even further in the division.

CC came across some trouble in the second inning with the bases loaded and one out but managed to get out of it. While CC was doing his job for the first half of the game, the offense was not. The Yankees’ first base-runner came in the fourth from a walk and nothing would come of it. Something that also wasn’t expected was that the Yankees would be no-hit through six innings by Ramirez. While he was doing that, CC was also pitching lights out (though not having a no-hitter) he had a shut-out through seven as well.

After a walk in the top of the seventh, Brett Gardner reached base and stole as Alex Rodriguez grounded out, moving Gardy to second. Brian McCann would then send a shot to right field, but after a great play by Mikie Mahtook and a bad base-running play by Gardner, Mahtook threw to second to double off the Yankees and end the inning and the Yankees first real scoring threat of the game. CC would stay out and go over 110 pitches and keep it a tie game. He’d leave with 6.2 IP, three hits, no runs, and six strikeouts. Justin Wilson came on to end the seventh successfully.

In the eighth the Yankees would finally get a hit from non other than Carlos Beltran, who has been amazing for the Yankees this month. However, with Rico Noel pinch-running for him, the Yanks’ could not get Noel home as he was stranded 90-feet away from a lead. Justin Wilson would pitch the whole bottom of the eighth and with two outs the Rays would break through. Logan Forsythe sent a shot just a few feet short of the stands for a double which would score Mahtook. At Wilson’s credit, he was nearing 30 pitches and looked great before this swing. Caleb Cotham would come on to end the inning and continue to look sharp.

In the top of the ninth the savior would pull through. Alex Rodriguez tied the game with a double to right-center scoring the speedster Brett Gardner. Then, after Chris Young came on to pinch run for Alex, and Brian McCann was intentionally walked, and Mr. Slade Heathcott made his triumphant return to the Yankees with a three run shot to left (4). After that, the Yankees fans in the Trop took over the crowd, and another Andrew Miller save would seal the deal.

CC Sabathia deserves a huge amount of credit for not only keeping the Yankees in this game, but giving them close to seven innings.

Tomorrow the Yankees will have Adam Warren making his first start since June, and once again for the Rays a great arm in Jake Odorizzi.
