New York Yankees Recap: Yanks’ Fall In Game Two of Doubleheader

After losing the first of two in today’s doubleheader, the New York Yankees had to retaliate or fall 4.5 games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East. The first game went eleven innings and was lost by the hands of Chasen Shreve. As for the second, the Yankees turned to Ivan Nova to pitch them to a win just 30 minutes after a heartbreaking loss. For the Jays, Marco Estrada would be making his season debut after his injury in spring training.

Unfortunately things did not go well for the Yankees. The Jays tacked on six runs with a home run and two doubles coming off the bats of Cliff Pennington, Jose Bautista, and Russell Martin in the second inning. Nova lasted just 1.2 innings and would hand the ball off to Nick Rumbelow starting a long day of players coming out of the bullpen.

The Yankees would start striking back in the fifth where Brett Gardner sent a shot to right center, bringing in Didi Gregorius and Brendan Ryan with him making it 6-3. Didi would then bring in a run with a double the next inning, bringing the deficit to just two runs. After Rumbelow gave the Yankees 1.1 IP with just a hit, Chris Capuano would follow with not so great of a performance to say the least. Capuano went 3.2 and gave up four earned runs, once again giving the Yankees a deficit that would prove too difficult to return from.

The Yankees went on to lose 10-7 despite a six-RBI day from Brett Gardner, who had three home runs in both of the games today. This might be the best thing to focus on from this game being as Gardner was slumping for quite some time. Branden Pinder and Nick Pazos once again gave the Yanks clean innings and they continue to look solid despite their work being in mostly out-of-reach games. It’s safe to say the Yankees are at the lowest of lows they’ve been in this season, in addition to all the injuries. Despite putting up 17 runs in the last three games, the Yankees couldn’t manage a win against the Blue Jays, making tomorrow’s game vital.

It goes without saying the Yankees really must win tomorrow when Masahiro Tanaka takes the mound. There’s still a lot of playing time left in the season, but the gas pedal must be on the road from now on. The hitting has still been there, but the pitching is making it 10 times harder to win these high scoring games.
