Tonight, the New York Yankees (77-62) and Toronto Blue Jays (80-60) began a four game series at Yankee Stadium after last night’s series opener was postponed due to rain. The Bronx Bombers sent 21-year-old rookie Luis Severino (3-3, 3.35 ERA) to the mound against one of the best pitchers in the game, David Price (15-5, 2.46). While it was a good pitching matchup on paper, Toronto’s offense was the story of the night as they hit five home runs against Yankee pitching in a 11-5 win to take a 2.5 game lead in the AL East.

Right out of the gate, Toronto took an early 5-0 lead against Severino before the Yankees stepped to the plate. After a leadoff double by Ben Revere, Josh Donaldson crushed a two-run homer to left center to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead. It was Donaldson’s 38th home run of the season.

Three batters later, with Edwin Encarnacion at second, Troy Tulowitzki hit a base hit to left to drive in Encarnacion and make the score 3-0. Justin Smoak would follow that single up with a two-run shot to right to put Toronto up 5-0. The lead would go to 6-0 in the top of the third when Russell Martin singled to center to drive in Encarnacion. That would end Severino’s night as Joe Girardi brought in Chris Martin, who was called up earlier today. Severino went 2.1 innings, gave up six runs on six hits, struck out four, and walked three on 71 pitches in the loss.

The Yankees would get on the board against Price in the bottom of the third. With runners on the corners and one out, Brett Gardner hit a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Brendan Ryan and cut the Blue Jays lead to 6-1, but Toronto answered right back in the following inning.

During that fourth inning, Martin gave up a two-out single to Jose Bautista, which was followed up by a two-run homer from Encarnacion. His 31st of the season extended Toronto’s lead to 8-1. The Yankees would get one back in the bottom of the inning when Didi Gregorius drove in Carlos Beltran with a two-out single to right.

With the Blue Jays leading 8-2 in the top of the fifth, Martin led off the inning against Andrew Bailey with his 18th home run of the season, a solo shot to left center. Due to Toronto having a 9-2 lead, Price only went five innings, but he was still effective. He gave up two runs on six hits, struck out seven, and walked one in the win.

The Yankees would try to claw their way back in the bottom of the sixth. After Chase Headley reached on an error and a Greg Bird single put runners on the corners, Gregorius hit a three-run homer to right off of LaTroy Hawkins. Gregorius’ ninth home run of the season got New York back in the game as they cut the deficit to 9-5. However, the Blue Jays would  tack on more runs.

One inning later, Martin continued to hurt his former team by hitting a two-run shot to left against Chasen Shreve for his 19th home run of the season. Tonight, Martin went 3-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI’s. In fact, seven of the nine Blue Jays’ starters had multi-hit games in the win and eight of them had at least one hit.

Next Game: Due to Thursday’s rainout, the Yankees and Blue Jays will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Yankee Stadium. For Game 1 (1:05 PM ET, FOX), the Yankees will send Michael Pineda (10-8, 4.15) to the mound against Marco Estrada (12-8, 3.18) for the Blue Jays. 30 minutes after game one is over, Ivan Nova (6-7, 4.50) will take the ball for New York against Marcus Stroman (2015 debut) for Toronto. You can catch Game 2 on YES.
