New York Yankees Recap: Home Runs Give Yanks’ First Of Three
After returning from their off-day, the New York Yankees started their AL East-packed-stretch with a three game series against the Rays. On the mound was sparkling Luis Severino and for the Rays, Jake Odorizzi who struggled in his last outing against the Royals.
Alex Rodriguez would start the action off in the bottom of the second with a two run shot (27) to left. Hopefully this is a sign of what’s to come (back) for Arod as he struggled overall throughout August. Severino would have a two-run-lead to work with moving forward until the Yanks’ would add on more. Brian McCann sent his 24th bomb of the season over the bullpen in right to make it a three-run game. McCann has picked up a lot of slack from the lately struggling Arod and injured Mark Teixeira and it doesn’t seem as if he’s going to let up.
Severino had three runners reach second in just four innings but he would stay calm and continue to look like a veteran. His one slip up came to the Rays’ veteran Evan Longoria as he’d pull a shot to left field. Severino’s line would end as 6.1 IP, seven hits, one earned, and five strikeouts. He’d leave the game with a man on, but Justin Wilson would come on to get the last two outs in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh the Yankees would go on to secure a Severino win even further with Greg Bird sending a shot to the second deck (4) making it a 5-1 game.
Adam Warren came in for the eighth and would give up a run in the ninth, however, Andrew Miller came out and finished the job. Though, Miller had to come out, the rest of the bullpen would get another day of rest. The Yankees would take the first game of the series and Severino would be credited his third win moving him to 3-2 on the season. In addition to this the Orioles would beat the Jays letting the Yankees close the gap to just half a game in the AL East.
