In the rubber game of their three game series against the Boston Red Sox (61-72) at Fenway Park, the New York Yankees (74-58) provided Masahiro Tanaka (11-6, 3.73) with enough run support in the early innings. Tanaka was able to cruise through this game  and even though the Red Sox made a comeback, the Bronx Bombers’ bottom four hitters all hitting home runs ended up being the difference in a 13-8 victory. With the win, the Yankees finish their six game road trip in Atlanta and Boston with a 4-2 record.

While the Yankees won the game, it was the Red Sox who got on the board first. Mookie Betts led off the inning with a double. Three batters later, David Ortiz hit a ball to right that bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double, putting the Red Sox ahead, 1-0.

One inning later, the Yankees broke out the bats against Henry Owens (2-2, 5.87). With Chase Headley on first and one out, Greg Bird put New York in front, 2-1, with a two-run home run to right field, his third of the season. John Ryan Murphy would follow that up with a solo shot to left center to make It 3-1. It was Murphy’s second home run of the season.

As the inning continued, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out and Chris Young hit a single off the Green Monster to drive in Didi Gregorius. With the score 4-1, Alex Rodriguez ripped a two-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 6-1. The scoring would finally culminate when Carlos Beltran hit a two-run shot to left against reliever Ryan Cook for his 14th home run of the season.

Then, one inning later, the offense continued. With Bird and Gregorius on base via a pair of walks and one out, Stephen Drew drove a ball over the wall in right for a three-run home run to give the Yankees a 11-1 lead. It was Drew’s 17th home run of the season. Then, in the fifth, Didi Gregorius would make it 12-1 New York with a solo shot to right center for his eighth home run of the season against Heath Hembree.

The Red Sox did tack on another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Betts. One inning later, Xander Bogaerts led off the frame with a solo shot to left field, his sixth of the season, to cut the lead to 12-3. As for Masahiro Tanaka, he did look sharp in this game, which he was throwing on regular rest. He went 6.1 innings, gave up four runs on six hits, struck out five, and walked one on 92 pitches (66 strikes) in the win.

Once Tanaka left the game, Andrew Bailey came into a Major League game for the first time since 2013. Bailey walked the first two batters he faced and then gave up a sacrifice fly to Pablo Sandoval and a RBI single to Bogaerts before Justin Wilson entered the game. Wilson would get Sandy Leon to fly out to left to end the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Gardner led off the inning with a double against Craig Breslow. Three batters later, Jose Pirela, who was pinch-hitting for Rico Noel, drove him in with an infield single that deflected off Travis Shaw at first base, to extend the Yankees lead to 13-5.

Boston would try to get back in the game in the bottom of the inning against Bryan Mitchell. With runners on second and third, Swihart drove in his second run of the game on a RBI single that scored Shaw. After a Bradley Jr. RBI single made the score 13-7 and Allen Craig walked, Joe Girardi went to Dellin Betances with the bases loaded and one out. Betances struck out Sandoval looking and got Bogaerts to ground out to short to get out of the jam.

Girardi was hoping Caleb Cotham would finish the game, but Cotham gave up back-to-back doubles to Leon and Shaw, which cut the Yankees’ lead t0 13-8. Andrew Miller would come in to replace Cotham and get the final three outs of the game to secure the win.

Next Game: After a day off Thursday, the New York Yankees will begin a three game series against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday night at Yankee Stadium. You can catch the game on YES at 7:05 PM ET. Luis Severino (2-2, 2.17) gets the start for the Yankees against Jake Odorizzi (6-7, 3.18) for the Rays.
