New York Yankees News: Dombrowski, Red Sox Open to Trading with Yankees?

During last years trade deadline the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox made a rare trade that sent Kelly Johnson over to ‘Beantown’ in exchange for Stephen Drew. Before that, the two rivals hadn’t completed a trade since 1997, and before that it was 1994.

Of course the one trade that everyone always talks about between the two clubs dates all the way back to December 26th, 1919 when the Boston Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees, but for as long as they’ve been rivals, the thought of the two teams exchanging players with one another is nearly sacrilegious.

However, with Dave Dombrowski now at the helm, things might actually change.

According to Steve Buckley of the Boston Heraldthe new GM of the Boston Red Sox is willing to put an end to the ‘Cold War’ and actually work with Brian Cashman as a viable trading partner.

"“You’re always open to making any trades you think will better your club,” Dombrowski said. “If you’re trading within your own division, I’ve always been open to it. But some people aren’t.”"

When Dombrowski was with the Tigers, both he and Brian Cashman weren’t exactly trading partners, but they have completed trades with one another in the past.

Most notable is the three team blockbuster trade back in 2009 when Curtis Granderson was sent to the Yankees, Ian Kennedy and Edwin Jackson were sent to the Diamondbacks and Max Scherzer, Phil Coke and Austin Jackson were sent over to Detroit.

This past off-season the three teams linked up again when Didi Gregorius was sent to the New York Yankees, Shane Greene was sent over to Detroit and Robbie Ray and Domingo Leyba were sent to the Diamondbacks. Though no player this time around from Detroit came over to the Yankees, the trade still wouldn’t have worked out had it not been for Dave Dombrowski.

With Dombrowski now with the Red Sox and willing to trade with the Yankees it’ll be interesting to see if a deal actually works out.

My final parting shot…Dustin Pedroia would be a nice fit at second base while Refsnyder continues to develop defensively down in the farm system, right?
