The Atlanta Braves are the latest casualty in the war for first place in the AL East waged by the Yankees. Yankees starter Nathan Eovaldi, who added another victory to his now 9-game winning streak, pitched 5 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits. Julio Teheran took the mound for the Braves but exited after only 4 innings after allowing 8 runs on 9 hits.

The Yankees power surge began in the second inning when Jacoby Ellsbury launched a home run into right field, scoring Stephen Drew and Nathan Eovaldi in the process. However, it was during the third inning that the game got away from the Braves when Chase Headley and Stephen Drew homered, driving in Greg Bird and Didi Gregorious respectively. In the bottom of the third, the Braves managed to score 2 runs, but by then the Yankees were already leading them 7-2.

By the 7th inning, the score already resembled something out of an NFL game. The Yankees led the Braves 8-5, but the best was yet to come. During a display of raw power and baseball savvy the Yankees produced 9 runs without hitting a single homerun. The Braves countered with one run and the inning ended with a score of 17-6. During the 8th inning, the Yankees continued their assault to finish the game 20-6.

By the Numbers

As fantastic as the result of this game, it does little to alleviate the lack of timely scoring that haunt the Yankees from time to time. The fact is evident because even though they managed to score 20 runs, they left 10 on base and were 12-21 with runners in scoring position.
