New York Yankees Editorial: Chris Young’s Revived Career

It was almost a year ago New York Yankees outfielder Chris Young was released by the Mets despite having a $7.25 million dollar contract with the team. From fans booing his name just thirty minutes away, Yankees fans almost can’t stop cheering while also knowing how important he is to the lineup this year.

Chris Young played for the Arizona Diamondbacks a majority of his career, and has recently been between the Oakland A’s aside from the two New York teams in the last two years. Now he has found himself as a key role player on a team who has championship aspirations any time they are in the playoffs.

With Young starting strictly against lefties not only has it gotten older outfielders days off, but it has added another lethal bat to the lineup no matter who sits out for him. He leads the majors in OPS and slugging against lefties, and he is only the fifth Yankees player ever to have multiple games in the same season with at least four runs, three hits, and three RBIs. The other four players who have done that? Alex Rodriguez, Tino Martinez, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth, not to mention he costs much less ($2.5 M) than he did on the Mets.

Young is excited about what lies ahead with the Yankees, something that he couldn’t look forward to with the Mets (of course he won’t oadmit that), but he did say this. “My passion has always been to be in the playoffs and have the opportunity to win a World Series. I welcome being in the situation I have”.

The difference a year makes right? Chris Young has went from not knowing what the status of his career was to hitting bombs in Bronx. His mindset is exactly where the Yankees want it, “I’m just totally focusing in on what I have right now”. Now is no time to slow up as the Yankees head into the last two months of the season with a lead in the AL East.
