New York Yankees Trade Rumors: Yankees Out on Craig Kimbrel
Late last night, staff writer Jason Evans reported that the Yankees were closing in on San Diego Padres reliever Craig Kimbrel.
The reports last night indicated that the Yankees were willing to flex their financial stability and take on all of the remaining $28 MM owed to Kimbrel through 2017. The Yankees remained adamant that they wouldn’t move Luis Severino, Gregory Bird or Aaron Judge for Kimbrel, but as of this morning, the Yankees were willing to deal top SS prospect Jorge Mateo, who was declined in a trade for Kimbrel earlier in the week.
As early as 8:00 AM EST this morning, Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reported that the Yankees and Padres spent much of the night trying to work out a deal for the closer, but both sides were unable to do so.
Now, it appears as if the deal is dead in the water, as this afternoon both Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney say there have been zero talks between the two sides since last night, which could mean that trade talks broke down in their discussions last night.
With jut about two and a half hours remaining until the 4:00 pm EST trade deadline, it’s beginning to look more and more likely that the Yankees will stand down and go with what they have for the last two months of the season.
Non the less, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reminds us all that Brian Cashman is known always have something up his sleeve.
It’ll be an interesting afternoon to say the least.
