New York Yankees Trade Rumors: Why the Yankees Won’t End up With David Price

Johnny Cueto to the Royals.

Cole Hamels to the Rangers.

David Price to the …. ?

Unfortunately in my opinion, the New York Yankees will not be the team that lands the last big name starter on the trade market.

Why?

In order to acquire Price from the Tampa Bay Rays in 2014, Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski gave up Drew Smyly, Austin Jackson and Willy Adames. Having said that, the Tigers will be looking for a significant trade package that’s equal to or better than what they gave up in 2014 for the left-handed David Price.

A similar package coming from the Yankees will have to include one of Luis Severino or Aaron Judge, both of whom are deemed untouchable by Yankees GM Brian Cashman. Now if the Yankees were unwilling to part ways with either of the two in order to acquire Cole Hamels, who is signed through 2018, it’s highly unlikely that Cashman will trade either of the two for two and a half months out of David Price.

Also, the Los Angeles Dodgers took part in a three-team blockbuster trade on Wednesday. According to reports, the outcome saw the Dodgers land Mat Latos, Alex Wood, Jim Johnson, Luis Avilan, Michael Morse and top-rated infield prospect Jose Peraza.

Interestingly enough, the Dodgers still remain interested in David Price, and this three team trade probably put’s them closer to acquiring his services.

Now, thanks to their nifty department of baseball operations, the Dodgers can offer a significant trade package around both Alex Wood and Jose Peraza to Detroit in exchange for Price, which allows them to field a competitive offer without having to deal their top two prospects, Corey Seager and Julio Urias.

When David Price is traded elsewhere and all the dust starts to clear, the Yankees might have to settle on trading for a middle-of-the-rotation starter like Mike Leake or Jeff Samardzija.

If not, the Yankees rotation will probably remain as is when it comes time to push for playoffs.
