New York Yankees Editorial: Will the Yankees Respond to Blue Jays Acquisition of Troy Tulowitzki?

Late last night the Toronto Blue Jays agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Colorado Rockies that will shake the entire A.L. East. The Blue Jays acquired star SS Troy Tulowitzki in exchange for Jose Reyes, rookie reliever Miguel Castro and two minor league pitching prospects.

It’s no secret that Tulowitzki is oft injury prone, but when healthy, he’s one of the best players in all of baseball. This season he’s been injury-free, and was slashing .300/.348/.471 with 12 home runs and 53 RBI in 87 games with the Colorado Rockies before being shipped up North to the ‘416’.

This trade undoubtedly gives the Blue Jays (50-50) another right-handed power bat in a potent lineup that already includes Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion and Josh Donaldson, but did the Blue Jays really need more offense? They’re already own the highest-scoring team in the entire major leagues, and currently sit seven games games back of the New York Yankees for the division lead and three games back of the Minnesota Twins for the second American League wild card slot, but in my opinion, the Blue Jays  are in dire need of starting pitching.

Perhaps this is all just part of Alex Anthopoulos’ plan to acquire more starting pitching, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

While it’s been rumored that Tulowitzki preferred to play for the New York Yankees, the fact is, he’s now a  member of the rival Toronto Blue Jays, and the question now becomes how will Brian Cashman respond?

Perhaps the Yankees make a move for Tulo’s now ex-teammate Carlos Gonzalez, who’s likely to be traded before Friday’s deadline now that the Rockies are finally ready to go into a full rebuild mode? Car-Go, similar to Tulo, has had his fair share of injuries, but when healthy, he’s amongst the best outfielders in the game.

If not Car-Go, the Yankees still need to make some sort of upgrade. The Blue Jays just got a little better, the Kansas City Royals became significantly better with the addition of Johnny Cueto earlier in the week, but what about the New York Yankees?

I guess time will tell.
