New York Yankees News: Brian Cashman Won’t Budge On Prospects

After several years of the New York Yankees using their farm system as trading pawns, GM Brian Cashman set a different tone this off-season. After showing how eager the organization was to get prospects such as Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Jorge Mateo and Gregory Bird to take their next steps closer to the Bronx. We are now within a week of the trade deadline, and until yesterday, there was a cause for urgency, trying to figure out what Brian Cashman will do now that he finally has a group of legitimate prospects. Finally fans everywhere can relax, as well as the four just mentioned.

Jon Heyman of CBS sent out this tweet yesterday in response to the loads of Cole Hamels questions he was getting. This was his first tweet, along with his write-up on the scenario.

This tweet followed-giving Yankees fans a relaxed feeling surrounding the beloved top four prospects.

This being not only for Cole Hamels, but any player available for trade. As seen in Heyman’s piece, the Yankees have already told teams the top four guys aren’t open for trade. As planned, it seems Cashman has started a new era for himself and this team, an era of not trading the farm, and not signing older past-prime players. The MLB is changing, and younger athletes are changing. With guys like Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, and Giancarlo Stanton leading the majors, it seems Cashman has seen what he has in Judge and Severino.  The top four prospects are growing as fan favorites, and Cash’ has let it get to this point by not trading them. What is there not to like about visioning Severino, Judge, and Bird in the Bronx, followed quickly by Jorge Mateo. For the first time in a while he might have a group of winners who are right from the organization, and that isn’t something to give away for a player who has maybe two years of relevancy left.

Do the Yankees need to make a move? That’s also another maybe, but Cashman will be sitting calm and cool right until the deadline. “Whatever happens, it’ll probably not be until the last 48 hours when prices come down”. The Yanks’ didn’t necessarily need a Johnny Cueto or Scott Kazmir, but could use a Ben Zobrist, who will be way cheaper, and could be just as effective with how much that move fits. All the trades Cashman made this off-season have panned out thus far, if he does make a move before the deadline I will have faith in it, I don’t think I could’ve said that in past years.
