New York Yankees Trade Rumors: Gary Sanchez on the Block?
With the MLB Trade Deadline now less than a week away, it appears as if Brian Cashman might be willing to trade his 22-year old catching prospect Gary Sanchez.
According to MLB Insider Buster Olney;
"“The perception of rival evaluators is that the Yankees aren’t going to trade pitching prospect Luis Severino or sluggers Aaron Judge or Greg Bird. But there is a sense that with Brian McCann and John Ryan Murphy established in the big leagues, the Yankees will listen to offers for 22-year-old catcher Gary Sanchez, who has improved this season and was recently promoted to Triple-A.”"
Back in 2011, Baseball America ranked an 18-year old Gary Sanchez as the 30th best prospect in 2011. As a matter of fact, having Sanchez stashed in the Yankees farm system was the reason Brian Cashman felt comfortable dealing Jesus Montero in exchange for Michael Pineda a few years back. Unfortunately, Sanchez never really lived up to the hype of being a top-5o prospect.
The young backstop reached Double-A Trenton in 2013, but it took him three more season before being promoted to Triple-A Scranton.
Sanchez’s bat was never the question. Instead, it was his defense, and the question of whether or not he can be a major league catcher is really what slowed down his progression. Sounds a lot like Rob Refsnyder at second base, doesn’t it?
Anyway, another added speed bump was in 2014, when Gary Sanchez was suspended for disciplinary reasons, which the Yankees organization is yet to reveal.
However, a new Gary Sanchez is on display in 2015. The 22-year old hit .262 with 12 home runs and 36 RBI for Trenton, and was chosen to represented the Thunder in the 2015 Futures All-Star Game. He was rewarded for his monstrous first half performance, and was promoted to Triple A right after the All-Star Game. In his first game with the RailRiders, he homered in his first at-bat.
"“You never know,” Brian Cashman said of Gary Sanchez. “There are a lot of guys that keep churning through, dreaming on and hoping on. You’ve got to realize they’re young kids. Sometimes you expect them to be on a consistent basis that, with that age and that experience, you might be expecting too much. You have to remember where they are and what they are. People do change.”"
It looks like Gary Sanchez’ trade value is the highest it’s ever been in a while\. I wonder who Brian Cashman can fetch in return for the young backstop?
The Chicago White Sox are certainly in need of catching depth. Perhaps this opens the door to a Jeff Samardzija trade?
I guess time will tell.
