Yasmany Tomas. Rusney Castillo, Yoan Moncada. We all know the names and while the New York Yankees made a splurge in the international market last season, for the next two seasons, their bonus money depletes. They can only offer signees a max bonus of $300,000.

Cuban Outfielder Eddy Julio Martinez is currently the number one international prospect according to MLB.com.  Martinez was eligible to sign before July 2nd since he was declared a free agent before the new signing period begins.

The deadline for the old period was June 15, and according to MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez, the Yankees made a run at the Cuban outfielder but failed to sign him.

It’s not like the Yankees didn’t do anything. Among MLB.com’s top 20 prospects, they signed five of the top 10 and and eight of the top 20. That’s not too shabby.

This is why they have gone quite heavy in pitching in the draft last year and this year to supplement that talent.

These kids are a few years away from making any sort of impact. That’s what happens when you’re signing kids at 16 years old.

Is it disappointing to not land Martinez? Sure. You want as many prospects as you can, especially one compared to Andruw Jones.

The Yankees won’t be totally shut out for the next two years because of the penalties. You never know what they can do with a late bloomer. Luis Severino was only signed for a bonus of $225,000 back in 2011.
