New York Yankees Game Recap: Nathan Eovaldi Shelled in 12-2 Loss

After dropping game one of a four game inter-league home and home split, the Yankees looked to even up the score against the Marlins on Tuesday night down in South Beach. This matchup in particular was relatively interesting because Nathan Eovaldi (5-1, 5.12 ERA) was set to take on ex-Yankee David Phelps (3-3, 3.99 ERA), each of whom were traded for one another in the off-season.

However, Eovaldi failed to rise to the occasion… again. After a 1-2-3 first inning for David Phelps, Eovaldi took the hill and was absolutely shelled by his former team. As a matter of fact, he failed to even make it out of the first inning, yielding eight runs on nine first innings hits. At one point Eovaldi gave up six straight singles, followed by a bases clearing triple off the bat of Adeiny Hechavarria. He managed to get David Phelps out, but than gave up two more consecutive hits, and before you could even blink, the Marlins were up 8-0.

Fortunately Chris Capuano was able to come on in relief after Eovaldi recorded just two outs, and managed to get Christian Yelich to ground out and end the first inning onslaught.

For the fourth time in his last five starts, Eovaldi gave up eight or more hits. This was obviously his shortest outing of the season, but with Ivan Nova set to return in the coming week, one has to wonder whether Adam Warren deserves to remain in the rotation over the struggling Eovaldi.

Despite two Miami Marlin errors from the left side of the infield in the top of the third, the Yankees still couldn’t solve their former starting pitcher, who eventually went on to pitch 7.0 innings of two run baseball, scattering just six hits and two walks.

The Marlins loaded the bases in their half of the third, but fortunately Capuano was able to work into and out of trouble, getting Christian Yelich to strike out and Giancarlo Stanton to pop out to Mark Teixeira to end the inning.

Giancarlo Stanton made up for his bases loaded out in the third by hitting his 24th home run of the season off Chris Martin in the bottom of the fifth, plating Dee Gordon, Christian Yelich and himself, putting the Marlins up 11-0, a new season-high in runs scored for Miami.

The Yankees managed to get two runs on the board in the sixth and seventh inning on an RBI from Brian McCann and Mason Williams, but the game was well out of reach.

The Marlins scored another run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single off the bat of J.T. Realmuto, as Jose Ramirez became the fourth consecutive pitcher to allow at least one earned run in the ball game for the Yankees.

Sam Dyson pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth, ending a miserable ball game for the Yankees, as they wen’t on to lose 12-2.

Both teams will head up to New York to play the final two games of the inter league series, as Michael Pineda (7-2, 3.74 ERA) is set to take on Jose Urena (1-2, 4.44 ERA).

The Yankees dropped to 34-30 on the year, and fortunately the Tampa Bay Rays were crushed by the Nationals 16-4, keeping the Yankees just one game out of first place.

On the bright side, the United States Women’s National Team defeated Nigeria 1-0 to advance into the round of 16 of the 2015 Women’s World Cup!
