Lifelong New York Yankees fan Richard Albero set a goal to walk from home plate at Steinbrenner field to home plate at Yankee Stadium to honor his fallen nephew, Gary, an insurance broker at the World Trade Center, who passed away in the 9/11 attacks, and raise $25,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.

Albero started his charity walk on March 2nd, leaving from home plate at Steinbrenner Field.  On Tuesday, Albero saw his goal through, reaching home plate in the Bronx.  The 65-year-old retired school teacher also reached his goal, raising nearly $27,000.  Albero felt he accomplished what he set out to do:

"During the walk, I thought, ‘Was I achieving what I wanted to achieve?’  I think I did."

After hearing Albero’s goal, members of the Wounded Warriors Project helped him carry out the feat.  The former military veteran has grown close to the charity and will remain involved:

"It helped me, when I was in pain from the walk, to think about what those guys had been through."

In Jacksonville, near the start of the 1,150 mile walk, which took 86 days, Albero ran out of water.  Walking through fields, weeds, and hills through the day, Albero hired drivers to bring him to a hotel each night, but although he had a fun, Albero has no plans to make the walk again, which he was surprised he did once:

"It seemed so far away.  When I walk onto that field, it’s just going to be a crazy, crazy feel."

Although Albero’s walk from Tampa Bay to the Bronx is complete, his purpose can be found at richardsyankeeswalk.org, where support and donations for Albero and the Wounded Warriors Project can be given.
