After a tough extra inning loss against the Washington Nationals (24-17) on Tuesday night, the New York Yankees (22-19) got off to a fast start against Jordan Zimmermann with two first inning runs. Adam Warren pitched well, but in the end, Washington scored the game winning run on a RBI single by Denard Span against Justin Wilson in the bottom of the seventh to lead the Nats to a 3-2 win. The Yankees have now lost three straight games and finished their nine game road trip with a 2-7 record.

The Bronx Bombers got out to an early lead in the first inning. After a Brett Gardner single to right field, Carlos Beltran extended his hit streak to 11 games with a double to right center that scored Gardner and gave New York a 1-0 lead. After Mark Teixeira advanced Beltran to third on a groundout, Brian McCann made the score 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center field. Unfortunately, just like Adam Warren’s last start against the Rays, those were all the runs that he would get.

Warren took the mound with a 2-0 lead and immediately gave one back. With one out in the bottom of the first, Ian Desmond crushed a ball to center field for his fourth home run and second of the series to make it 2-1 Yanks.

The Yankees did not see much of Bryce Harper in this game. Harper grounded out to first in the first, but that would be his final at-bat. In the bottom of the third, home plate umpire Marvin Wilson called a low strike against Harper, which he was not happy with. Harper went out of the batter’s box and after Wilson told him to get in. Harper was then thrown out of the game along with his manager, Matt Williams.

The Nationals would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a two out home run by Tyler Moore that bounced off the top of the wall in left and over for his third home run of the season.

After those first two runs against Zimmermann, the Nats right-hander kept the Yankees off the board as he recorded his fourth win of the season. In seven innings, he gave up two runs on five hits, struck out six, and walked one.

Despite those two home runs, Warren did pitch well in this game. He gave up three runs (two earned runs) on four hits and struck out four. However, he walked four batters in this game and the walks came back to bite him in the seventh, leading him to pick up his third loss of the year.

The inning started when Wilson Ramos grounded one to Chase Headley, who misplayed it. Ramos reached first, but Headley was charged with the error, which would end up concluding Ramos’ 19-game hitting streak. After a Moore walk, Headley would redeem himself by making a diving catch on a bunt attempt by Danny Espinosa.

As the inning continued, Warren would walk pinch-hitter Dan Uggla to load the bases, which made Joe Girardi go to Justin Wilson out of the bullpen. Wilson would face Denard Span, who had only two hits in 21 at-bats against left-handed pitchers. However, Span won the battle as he hit a single to left field to give the Nats the lead. Wilson would strike out Desmond and get Escobar to ground out to end the inning, but the damage was already done.

The Yankees did have a chance to get back in this game in the eighth inning. With two outs, Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann would work back-to-back walks against the lefty Matt Grace. During the inning, Slade Heathcott made his major league debut when he pinch ran for Teixeira. New York would fail to capitalize when Chase Headley grounded out to short to end the inning.

In the ninth inning, closer Drew Storen gave up a two-out single to Didi Gregorius, giving Alex Rodriguez the opportunity to pinch hit. Storen would strike out A-Rod for the second straight night to record his 12th save in 13 chances.

Next Game: After a day off Thursday, the New York Yankees will begin a six game homestand on Friday night against the Texas Rangers (16-23) at 7:05 PM ET on YES. Colby Lewis (3-2, 3.06) gets the start for the Rangers against Michael Pineda (5-1, 3.31) for the Yankees.
