Yanks Go Yard Radio Rewind: Yankees-Nationals Preview (5/19-5/20)

On Sunday night’s episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, brought to you by KNODA.com, I started off the episode by talking about the New York Yankees (22-17) recent three-game series against the Kansas City Royals, a series in which the Bronx Bombers lost two out of three games.

While CC Sabathia had a very good outing on Saturday, Michael Pineda and Chris Capuano struggled in the other two games against a very good Royals lineup. Once again, New York’s offense had trouble scoring runs on a consistent basis. New York scored six runs in the series and were shut out for the first time in 2015 on Sunday.

The Yankees finally got a day off yesterday and they will conclude their nine game road trip tonight and tomorrow with a two game series against the Washington Nationals (22-17) for the first time since 2012. The Nats are a team that got off to a rocky start, but they have now won 15 of their last 19 games since April 28.

When you talk about Matt Williams’ club, the first thing that comes to mind is the impressive season that 22-year old right fielder Bryce Harper is having. He has been the NL Player of the Week for consecutive weeks and for good reason. He is hitting .338 with 14 home runs and 37 RBI’s. This month, he is hitting .411 with nine home runs and 22 RBI’s. However, the most impressive stat arguably about Harper is his 36 walks as he has shown some great plate discipline.

This offseason, the Nationals made one of the biggest splashes of the winter when they signed ace pitcher Max Scherzer. So far, Scherzer is 4-3 with a 1.75 ERA in eight starts and has had ten or more strikeouts in three of his last four outings.

To talk more about the Washington Nationals, I spoke with the co-editor over at District On Deck, Pablo Roa about Harper, Yunel Escobar’s great start at third base, and some of the latest injuries involving left fielder Jayson Werth and one of the pitchers in their starting rotation, Doug Fister:

  •  The atmosphere around this two game series in the Nation’s Capital
  • Main reasons behind the Nats turnaround
  • Scherzer off to a fantastic start as the ace of the rotation
  • Pitching Matchups
  • Nathan Eovaldi (Tonight’s Yankees starter) with good success against the Nats in his career
  • Gio Gonzalez (Tonight’s Nats starter) has still shown signs of inconsistency this season
  • Adam Warren (Tomorrow’s Yankees starter) had his best start of the season last time out vs. Tampa
  • Jordan Zimmermann (Tomorrow’s Nats starter) off to a 1.89 ERA in three starts this month
  • Nationals Players To Watch: Yunel Escobar and Wilson Ramos (18-game hit streak)
  • Yankees Players To Watch: Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann
  • Should the Nationals think about trading for Troy Tulowitzki?
  • How will the bullpen look when Casey Janssen makes his 2015 debut?
